Carnegie Caulfield Cycling Club Championships

Sandown International Raceway, August 19, 2000

Kristjan Snorrason successfully defended his title as Club Road Race Champion at the Sandown International Raceway last Saturday. A reshuffle of the late season program saw the race held on the 3km motor race circuit instead of the hilly road course at Modella in Gippsland. A relatively small A grade field rode hard in ideal conditions with repeated attempts at escape coming to nought.

Entering the final lap Marcus Balschiet held a tenuous 50 metre lead which evaporated on the climb of the back straight. A savage attack from Karl Wood on the climb blew past Balschiet, but was in turn reeled in by the attentive pursuers. Out of the final corner the group was tightly bunched and Snorrason burst out of the pack to retain his title. Visitors Zeth Romanis and Chris Kyriotis took second and third while Simon Bone finished fourth.

The B grade race was also the masters Championship, 44 riders formed up for the start but the four hardest of the 'old guys' established themselves a substantial lead which they held until the end. The final dash looked to be decided with ten metres left to go, Denis Bowen-Day sat up convinced he had it won only to find mountain bike specialist Gerran Buckland beat him on the line with a classic throw at the line. Bruce Will and Matt Dowling were third and fourth.

C grade's race was a fairly quick affair ending in a bunch kick won by Stefan Korsch from Ben Bisset, Alan Schnable and Tom Pietkiewicz.

Four escapees in D grade, septuagenarian Bruce Cochrane proving too good in the sprint for John Groves, Mick Donlan third and newcomer Jamie Davey picking up a few sprinting tips after working hard throughout.

Collie-Donnybrook and Return Cycle Classic, Collie Criterium

Collie, Western Australia, August 19-20, 2000

Hollands escapes for victory

Eddy Hollands won the 75th edition of the 104 km Cardinal Contracting Collie-Donnybrook and Return Cycle Classic. Starting from scratch in the undulating classic, Eddy broke away shortly after the race came together, leading home 1996 winner Chris Brown by 22 seconds. In third place was Paul O'Neill closely followed by Dave Townson, Scott Suckling and Ric Steele. A head wind on the way out to Donnybrook meant the small scratch group were looking for big gains and they worked well to reduce the gap to limit from 35 to 10 minutes. With 10 kilometres remaining the last of the groups were caught, the strong 11 minutes bunch and then Eddy broke away going up the last of the climbs to solo to victory.

The A Grade criterium started with an attack from the blocks by Ric Steele that was closed down straight away. There were attacks going off the front and coming back at quite a rate for the first ten minutes of the race when Eddy Hollands and Peter Dawson got a small break. These two were joined by Daniel Mackey and Paul O'Neill and the four worked well and rode away from the bunch. On the bell Paul attacked and was covered by Daniel and the break split in two. Daniel went on to win the sprint from Paul, and Peter beat Eddy for third while Chris Brown led the bunch in for fifth.

A good weekend worth of racing was enjoyed by all those that travelled to Collie and it would be awesome to see more people down there in 2001.
