After his fourth place yesterday, Jan "Der Kaiser" Ullrich went to
the top of the podium today in the second race of the Trittico Lombardo
series (three days in Lombardy). He won the 54th edition of the Coppa
Agostoni, beating breakaway companions, Denis Lunghi (Colpack) and Filippo
Simeoni (Amica Chips) in the final sprint after a successful attack
with two kilometres to go. It was his first road race win of the season,
his only other success being the Freibuger Nacht Criterium.
The 197 kilometre race finished with five circuits around Lissone,
and it was on the second last of these Gotti and Simeoni set off in
pursuit of Gianluca Tonetti. They were chased by Ullrich, Missaglia,
Dufaux, Pozzi, Lunghi and Spruch and that was the race. Riders like
Bartoli, Di Luca, Donati, Freire and Garzelli were left behind in the
next group.

On the last climb, the trio of Gotti, Simeoni and Tonetti had 10 seconds
on the next five riders, but with 30 kilometres to go, the eight joined
together. Teammates Pozzi and Simeoni worked together to get one of
them in the final break, and Simeoni was the lucky one, or not as it
turned out. With 9 kilometres to go, Simeoni and Lunghi attacked and
Ullrich was the only one to try and chase, leaving the other five behind.
Then, with a couple of kilometres left, Ullrich caught the pair and
it was all over for them, as the German has an impressive sprint when
required.
The other two were disappointed at losing, but not surprised given Ullrich's
condition at the moment. "He is a great champion," said Simeoni. Ullrich
now leads the overall Trittico Lombardo classification, with one race
to go, the Copppa Bernocchi tomorrow. However, he will not gain any more
points there as he is opting not to race the finale, choosing instead
to ride the Meisterschaft von Zürich on Sunday. He has enjoyed his Italian
outing however, being impressed with the crowds that he commented were
"nearly as big as in Germany."
