21st Tour of WillametteUSA, April 11-16, 2000Stage 5 - April 15: Cottage Grove Criterium, 45 minutes men/30 minutes womenSpeaking of going hard...By John Alsedek, cyclingnews.com correspondent The late-afternoon criterium had been expected to be anything but hard. Contested on a one-kilometer circuit in the bustling hamlet of Cottage Grove, rainy conditions and a late start precipitated a shortening of both the men's and women's stages to 45 and 30 minutes, respectively. However, all that did was serve to compress a whole day's worth of action into a very short length of time. In the women's race, the pace was kept high by a combination of an endless array of primes and an equally endless array of attacks by the Saturn squad. With Holden's strong Timex teammate, Tracey Gaudry out of the race due to illness, Saturn smelled blood and sent Anna Wilson on a variety of atacks. Howerver, with just five laps to go, Holden launched a preemptive strike of her own, taking along only Petra Rossner (Saturn) along for the ride. G.C. rival Bessette took up the chase, along with Kori Kelly (Proctor & Gamble) and Jennifer Eyerman (Jane Cosmetics). However, Holden was not to be stopped. Though she finished second to Rossner on the stage, Holden added about another dozen seconds to her lead.
Anna Wilson's report In the morning we had 16 km time trial. Mari Holden blitzed the course to finish in 22 minutes, 28 seconds. Elizabeth Emery was second, 8 seconds slower, and Lyne Bessette was third, in 22 minutes, 56 seconds. I finished in 23 minutes and 16 seconds. So Mari extended her lead in the overall classification to one minute 35 seconds over Lyne, with Dede and I close behind in 3rd and 4th. In the afternoon we raced a criterium in the pouring rain. We were aggressive, hoping to force a breakaway. However, our aggression only served to totally waste us and in the last 6 laps of the race, Mari attacked and only Petra was able to go with her. Petra won the race but Mari gained another 20 seconds over the rest of us. AAARRRRGGHHHHH!!!! It wasn't. After watching Eddy Gragus (Jelly Belly) snap up several early primes, a strong atack was launched: Mercury's Gord Fraser and Will Frischkorn were joined by Graeme Miller and John Lieswyn (Shaklee), Jason McCartney of Nutra Fig, and 7 UP/Colorado Cyclist's Juan-Carlos Pineda, who was strictly along for the ride. That got to be a very fast ride just one lap later as another Mercury man - Kirk Willett bridged to the leaders, and the group took off. Realizing the danger to Zabriskie's second place, the 7 UP/Colorado Cyclist team worked hard to try to bring back the break, but the combination of horsepower in the break and Mercury blockers in the field was just too much, and the seven ended up building a lead of 43 seconds with just a few laps to go... On a fast, one-kilometer circuit, 43 seconds means 'almost lapping the field', and that's how it ended, with Fraser jumping clear of the break to catch the tail end of the field in what was perhaps the only Mercury glitch of the stage. Said Fraser afterward, "My attack was to set up Kirk, but he never got the opportunity for the counterattack." In any case, Willett did the next best thing, taking second in the stage and moving past Zabriskie into second overall, with only one day of racing remaining.
