21st Tour of WillametteUSA, April 11-16, 2000Stage 3 - April 14: Kill Hill Road Race, 105 miles men/68 miles womenWomen: Shake up by TimexBy John Alsedek, cyclingnews.com correspondent After Thursday's backbreaking - and that isn't meant in a figurative sense(!) Smith River Road Race, the riders in the men's and women's events were rewarded with one of America's best road courses. A combination of clean and largely traffic-free roads, snaking climbs and descents, and some breathtaking vistas. Of course, the top contenders were perhaps a little too preoccupied to enjoy them fully, as both races saw significant happenings in the overall classification. In the 68-mile women's event, the first significant move came at around ten miles, when a group of 11 went clear; however, with such danger women as Anna Wilson (Saturn) and Julie Young (AutoTrader.com) involved, the Timex team was unlikely to give them much leeway, and, after gaining a maximum of 20 seconds, they were soon reeled back in. From that point on, it was largely Saturn and Timex attacking each other and the AutoTrader.com squad of race leader Pam Schuster and second overall Andrea Ratkovic. While Schuster was unable to match the front runners, Ratkovic was going well, and finished third in the Wolf Creek mountains sprint, just nine seconds behind Timex's Tracey Gaudry. After a general regrouping on the descent, the lead pack set up for a time bonus sprint, taken by Wilson from Saturn teammate Julie Hanson and Mari Holden of Timex. However, that was as close as Saturn would come to victory today, as Holden and Gaudry countered Saturn's Lyne Bessette when she attacked on the Fox Hollow climb, and then powered their way to a 1-2 finish that also moved them into the top two places overall.
Pam Schuster's report Today's party included 68 miles, 3 QOM's, 1 hot spot and another uphill finish. Everyone on the AutoTrader.com team was ready to defend the black/white/grey camoflague leader's jersey. Not an easy task considering the world class teams that we were up against. Our strategy was still the same.....ride up front. The attacks were pretty much non-stop from before the 2nd QOM at mile 30 until the finish. We rode with our heart and in the process, I lost my legs near the finish. :( Courtesy of racereport@vcnet.com
Anna Wilson's report Well today didn't work out quite as well as we hoped. We raced 110 kilometres, and finished only a few kilometres after climbing a 5 km climb. We hoped that Lyne Bessette would have a great day and ride away on the final climb to take back the leader's jersey. The rest of us tried to wear out the field before the final climb with lots of attacks. The Autotrader team had Pam Schuster leading overall at the start of today's race and they worked really hard to keep her in the front bunch all day. Timex's Kim Smith was aggressive all day and Tracey Gaudry was also quite aggressive while Mari Holden kept a fairly low profile. Although we tried hard to force a breakaway we weren't successful and we all hit the final climb together. Lyne attacked immediately and initially got a good gap. But Mari and Tracey were able to close it and right near the top of the climb, Tracey attacked and Lyne could not respond. Mari set out after Tracey and the two of them got together to time trial to the finish. Lyne and Dede got together behind them and chased as hard as they could but couldn't close the gap. Mari won the stage, and Lyne and Dede think they were about 20 seconds back. So, Mari should be the new tour leader with Lyne probably holding second overall and Tracey third. I climbed just off the back of the group behind Lyne and Dede and was about 10 metres off the back of them at the finish. I am hoping that the usual slack policy will be employed here where time gaps aren't noticed unless they are at least 5 seconds and so I will be given the same time as the bunch! We will have to wait and see what the results say. So not the best result for us but we all raced really hard. Tomorrow we have two stages to race - a 16km time trial early on and then a criterium late in the day. So it will be a tough day. The action began after just 13 miles, as a five-man break including Steve Hegg (Jelly Belly), Alex Gardner and Donald Reeb (both Nutra Fig) went clear. By the second mountain sprint at 31 miles, the quintet had built up a lead of 1:30, a gap that would grow to a maximum of 4:24 before the Mercury-led field decided to rein them in. They were all but caught by the day's final mountain sprint at 67 miles, but Hegg and Kiwi Brendan Vesty (Navigators) managed to stay out front on the long, twisty descent and through the feed zone. There they gained some reinforcements when Mercury's Kirk Willett (second overall) had a feed zone mishap, Jelly Belly took advantage of the opportunity. They attacked, sending fourth-placed Adam Livingston and teammate Josh Collingwood up the road to join the lead duo. By the 85-mile mark, they'd built up a lead of 1:00. However, Mercury never panicked, and after letting the break hang out to dry for ten more miles, they started chasing in earnest and brought things back together just in time for the final five miles, most of which was uphill...and that's when things got REALLY interesting. No sooner had the climb to Spencer Butte begun, than the largely-intact field was blown apart by attack after attack: Ron Schmeer (Nutra Fig), Norm Carter (Jelly Belly), Kirk Willett (Mercury), Mark McCormack (Saturn), Dave Zabriskie (7 UP/Colorado Cyclist), and Moninger himself all tried their luck, only to be hauled back. But then Moninger gave it another go, no one was able to counter, and he soloed in for the win, 15 seconds ahead of a group led in by Jelly Belly's Eddy Gragus. Combined with the time bonus for the stage win, it gave Moninger a nice 50-second cushion on time trial ace Zabriskie going into tomorrow's race against the clock. As Mercury team director Thurlow Rogers noted: "Zabriskie's got a lot of time to make up now. He's a very good time trialist, but so is Scott. Today was hopefully to nickel-and-dime some time, to take the pressure off Scott - but lo and behold, he picked up fifty cents' worth." Overall, Moninger increased his lead over Zabriskie to 0:50.
