21st Tour of WillametteUSA, April 11-16, 2000Stage 1 - April 12: Greenhill Road Race, 82 miles men/68 miles womenWomen: Saturn too strong - justBy John Alsedek, cyclingnews.com correspondent Contested on a thirty-plus mile circuit with a seemingly endless series of rolling hills and sharp turns, today's Greenhill Road Race was custom-made for breakaways, and that's just what happened in both of the day's events. In the 66-mile women's race, it was Saturn's Petra Rossner (Ger), better known for her sprinting prowess, who took an early flyer. The former Olympic pursuit champion gained a maximum of 4:30 before being reeled back in just before the Queen of the Mountains sprint. The front runners kept the pressure on during the ensuing descent, splitting the main group into two parts that were separated by as much as a minute before they coalesced around the 53-mile mark. With about ten miles to go, Saturn and Timex began launching attack after attack, but it wasn't until just a mile to go that Saturn's Lyne Bessette went clear, ultimately finishing nine seconds up on a four-woman chase group led in by Katrina Berger (Harbour Lights), and 18 seconds ahead of another foursome that included prologue winner Tracey Gaudry of Timex. In the overall classification, Bessette took the lead by 0:10 on Mari Holden (Timex), with Bessette's Saturn teammate Anna Wilson in third. Anna Wilson's report Today we raced 95kms, with a steep 1.5 km uphill finish. My Saturn team has 7 riders here, and we think 5 of us are capable of winning overall. Timex has 6 riders here, and I think only 3 are capable of winning overall. So today we decided to be very aggressive and use our numbers to make the Timex team chase hard. Petra Rossner (Saturn) started the ball rolling with an attack at about the 15km mark. She was very impressive in holding off all the initial chasers and eventually the bunch relented and allowed her to ride off alone. She built up a lead of 4 and a half minutes before the Timex squad began to get worried and sent three riders to the front to begin the chase. They chased until the mountain sprint at the 65km mark. At that point, Mari Holden took over the chase and set a fierce tempo up the climb. We caught Petra about 500 metres from the top and then Mari and Lyne Bessette upped the tempo and went over the top together. Down the descent, a group of about 20 riders formed in the lead. For the Saturn team we had 4 riders in the lead group - Lyne, Susy Pryde, Julie Hanson and myself. Timex had three riders - Mari Holden, Tracey Gaudry and Kim Smith. So we started attacking one after another, trying desperately to get one rider away. Timex did a good job of covering every move, along with the Autotrader team, who also had 4 riders in the lead group. Eventually we had exhausted ourselves and had to have a little relief and this allowed the second group on the road to catch us. This was good for us because both Dede Demet and Petra Rossner were in the second group for Saturn, whereas no Timex riders were so we gained more numbers. Dede and Petra immediately began attacking again and Timex had to do a lot of work to contain all of us. Lyne and I took it as easy as we could, preparing for the final climb. We hit the climb and almost immediately, Mari Holden went to the front. I hung on her wheel, determined to try and stay there. We passed the 1 km to go sign and a couple of hundred metres later, Lyne Bessette (Saturn) attacked. It was an impressive attack. Mari tried to go with her and with her effort, she dropped me and everyone else. But she couldn't quite close the gap to Lyne. Lyne crossed the finish line in first place, about 10 seconds clear. Mari was second, and I crossed the line with Julie Young, about 5 or 10 seconds behind Mari. So Lyne should now be the overall leader of the tour, with Mari in second and I am not sure if I am 3rd or 4th at this stage. 4 days left to race so a lot could change from here. I'll keep you informed!

According to Livingston, their strategy was simple:"We're going to just try to keep it together until the bottom of the final climb, then Eddy (Gragus) and I can hopefully do what we did yesterday." However, there was a four-headed fly in their ointment: a breakaway group of Bill Innes (Kissena), Graeme Miller (Shaklee), Jesus Zarate (Mercury), and Doug Ziewacz (7 UP/Colorado Cyclist). They went clear just about midway through the race and built up a lead that hovered around 30 seconds for the next 35 miles, till they were captured with just six miles to go. As the lead group reached the one-kilometer uphill finish, Mercury's Scott Moninger went clear, finishing seven seconds up on the quartet of David Zabriskie (7 UP/Colorado Cyclist), Kirk Willett (Mercury), Damon Kluck (Spokesman), and Antonio Cruz (Saturn). Overall, Moninger took the race lead by 0.10 over Zabriskie, with Willett third at 0.11.
