A group of four riders, Ricardo Guedes (Maldonado), Walter Marcel (Villa Teresa), Julio Acevedo (Policíal) and José Luis Maneiro (San Antonio de Florida) went off early an when the chase started the peloton split. Overall leader Gregorio Bare found himself in a second group while overall second, Cuban Peréz, had mechanical troubles so by winning the first group sprint Gustavo Figueredo, winner of the Rutas de Americas in March, also took the leader's jersey.
