Prologue - April 10: Leer, 60 km

Olaf Pollack (Gerolsteiner) won the Criterium prologue (Grosser Preis der Stad Leer) in the Niedersachsen Rundfahrt and will wear the yellow jersey on the first stage, despite the fact that it did not count for the overall GC.

After forty laps, and 64 kms, in the east Friesian town Leer, he won the bunch sprint ahead of Czech Fratisek Trkal and Dutch Rudi Kemna. The fact that the prologue didn't count was good luck for Mapei, who were stuck at the airport in Brussels and couldn't compete the crit. They will be at the start of the first stage however, 167.8 kilomters from Leer to Melle.
