Women's reports Women's results Men's reports Men's results Sydor cruises wire to wireBy Tim Maloney, cyclingnews.com correspondent Old pro Alison Sydor of Volvo Cannondale said of her win in Mazatlan that "I knew with two strong GT riders and two Gary Fishers, it could come down to tactics...my best tactic is to take the lead from the start. But it was totally an individual effort today." The experienced Sydor attacked early on the 5 lap race and took the lead ahead of chaser Chrissy Redden on the dusty course, powering away to victory on the technical circuit. Behind, Redden chased, but was eventually passed by GT's Dunlap and Leboucher. Last week's winner Mary Grigson of Australia rode steadily for 5th.
The usual suspectsAustralian report by David Ewins Australian women's cross country rider Mary Grigson put on yet another stellar performance to climb onto the podium for the third time in as many weeks in International competition, finishing fifth in the second round of the Women's MTB World Cup event in Mexico Sunday. After working well with Gary Fisher/SAAB teammate Canadian Chrissy Redden to win the opeing round in Napa valley last week, it was time to return the favour in Mexico. Working together as a team - but without the the assistance this time of Italian star Paola Pezzo who had returned to Europe - the two Gary Fisher/SAAB teammates held onto the lead group before it was Redden's turn to make the break, eventually finishing fourth some 2:01 minutes down. Her compatriot Alison Sydor held on to win the Mexican event ahead of Alison Dunlap and Laurence Leboucher. In a race that proved to feature the exact same faces as the first round - with exception of world champion Marga Fullana and the absent Pezzo, it was the case of the usual suspects sorting themselves into a different order, making the points race for the series one of the closest in recent history. The strong showing of the Gary Fisher/SAAB team has left Sydor, Dunlap and Leboucher wishing they had stronger teammates with which to work. Grigson can only answer this with a beaming smile, as she attributes much of her brilliant early form to the atmosphere and support of her team and teammates. For the rest of the Australian girls, it was a case of mixed fortunes due to the early biff and barge tactics that occurred throughout the field. AIS/Be-one rider Honi Geysen and compatriot Anna Bayliss (Cannondale Australia) managed to sweep around the outside of the field in the start loop and forge on to finish a reported 19th and 26th respectively. However Team Merida rider Delleys Franke got pushed into the bunting and dropped to 58th before she could remove the plastic tape from her wheel. Despite the disappointing start, Delleys managed to salavage a 40th place finish. Interestingly, New Zealand's Sadie Parker reported seeing riders pulling at Dellys jersey as she attempted to pass them. The matter is yet to be heard. Kiwis in first ever Latin American World CupCourtesy of the NZMBA Imagine a sun drenched beach beside the Pacific Ocean with white chalk cliffs reflecting the sun off the blue sparkling water... and you have the setting for the first ever Latin American Round of the Tissot-UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, near the coastal town of Mazatlan, Mexico. Held at sea level and 300 metres from the beach, the rocky and dusty technical course featured 65% singletrack with an elevation gain of 80 metres. In the Women's race won by Alison Sydor (Canada - Volvo-Cannondale), New Zealander Sadie Parker (Giant Helly Hansen) finished 48th, 19 minutes behind the winning time. Sydor attacked early in the race and lead until the finish leaving second and third placing to be fought over by GT teamates Alison Dunlap and Laurence Leboucher. Mary Grigson, the Australian who won her first UCI race in the previous round, finished a credible 5th after a solid performance. There was some concern before the race for Parker as she and 45 others arrived in Mexico minus their bikes, however they later turned up. Little known winner Martino Fruet of Team Ritchey said after his first World Cup XC win in Mazatlan, Mexico that "This a perfect course for me - I like the courses that are technical", and technical, tricky and testing it was. A 7.6 km. course, shortened to 6.6 km offered little climbing, trecherous sand and narrow, twisty singletrack with no passing lanes which had many pros upset and an estimated 12,000 spectators. On the baking Sunday afternoon, 129 men started 7 laps of racing on the 6.6 km course. Miguel Martinez (FRA) Full Dynamix and Michael Rasmussen (DEN) Haro/Lee Dungarees) were not on hand, preferring to prepare for the more important European races ahead, while last week's Napa winner Van Dooren, Thomas Frischknecht and Roland Green all flatted out. US Champ Travis Brown crashed heavily, breaking his leg and putting him out of action for at least 8 weeks. German newcomer Fumic led early on until a determined Hoydahl surged into the lead with three laps to go. Hoydahl was determined to gain Olympic selection for Norway, but as he powered away in front with one lap remaining, Fruet continued his charge from his 18th starting position and suprisingly passed the Norwegian with just over a lap to go and continued on to victory. Aussies Woods and Rowney both raced well all day, with the experienced Woods ending up on the podium in 5th. American Tinker Juarez was 10th, putting him in the top spot for US Olympic Selection, while the unfortunate Brown may now be out of the running, and Steve Larsen was a DNF. Kiwi reportCourtesy of the NZMBA In the Men's race held later that day, a young unknown Martino Fruet (Italy) beat Rune Hoydahl (Norway) to take first place in front of 12,000 spectators. Fruet toiled in the back of the pack for the first few laps, but was able to quickly make his way up the field as the sharp rocks caused many top racer's tyres to puncture. Following his 47th placing last week, Kashi Leuchs (New Zealand - Volvo Cannondale) produced a solid finish coming 24th, 7 minutes behind the winning time. Further back, New Zealander Laurence Mote raced well to finish 79th, 11 placings above his world ranking.
