Houffalize World Cup - CDMHouffalize, Belgium, April 30, 2000
Women's reports Women's results Men's reports Men's results Fullana and Meirhaeghe score for Subaru-SpecializedRound three of the Mountain Bike World Cup was held in the Belgian town of Houffalize, with an estimated 30,000 spectators watching the action in cool but dry conditions. First off were the 87 contestants in the women's event who had to complete nearly 4 laps of the course for a distance of 36.3 kilometres. On lap two, Team GT's Alison Dunlap (USA) took command and led throughout the lap. In second was the Spanish champion, Marga Fullana (Subaru-Specialized), while Corine Dorland from the Netherlands (Be-One) lay in third. Round one winner, Mary Grigson (Aus, Gary Fisher/Saab) was also riding well in fourth place. Dunlap's lead was not to last however, as she punctured at the end of the lap, giving Fullana the lead. The Spaniard was riding with Dorland through the third and fourth laps and it was only on the last that she managed to shake the Dutch rider. Grigson was holding onto third but Dunlap was chasing hard, passing several riders as she tried to make up a two and a half minute deficit. She didn't quite make it, but finished a very creditable fourth as Fullana rode to a jubilant victory. Elsbeth Vink, Fullana's teammate managed her best ever result in fifth. Fullana said that she had a cold during the week and really felt it today, being surprised with Dorland's strength. For her part, Dorland was happy to be feeling good, especially as it was an important race in terms of Olympic selection. Tim Maloney's view On a beautiful day in the eastern Belgian Ardennes Mountains, perhaps 30,000 enthusiastic beer fueled spectators showed up to hoot and holler for the mountain bikers: a tradition that is a fixture on the international MTB calendar. Although World Champ Margarita Fullana of Spain took the win for her Specialized team, the real story in today's women's XC was the emergence of Australian Mary Grigson of the Gary Fisher-Saab squad. Grigson shares her coach Damian Grundy of AIS with Cadel Evans and her hard work is paying off as she came 3rd today after an early crash. Grigson bounced back like a kangaroo and in doing so, took over the leader's jersey in the Women's World Cup points standings. American Alison Dunlap of GT also had a solid ride for 4th, while Grigson's Gary Fisher-Saab teamate Paola Pezzo had a steady ride for 6th. Canadian Alison Sydor of Volvo-Cannondale just couldn't get it together today with a disappointing 11th place finish.

There was a race held the day before on the same circuit to give the lower ranked riders in the World Cup a chance to qualify for Sunday. Amongst these was eventual winner, Belgian Filip Meirhaeghe (Subaru-Specialized) who finished third on Saturday. Despite this, he still started a fair way from the front and was playing catch up for most of the five and three quarter laps. On the first climb he was still a quarter of the way down the field, but rode extremely well to move into the top three by the end of the lap. Christophe Dupouey (Giant) and Miguel Martinez (Full Dynamix) were the only two in front of him, while round two winner, Bas Van Dooren (Be-One) and Jose Antonio Hermida (Bianchi Albacom) followed. It was still tight on lap three, as Meirhaeghe and Martinez trailed Dupouey, although Hermida had experience a puncture and was in eighth spot. He came back on the next lap though, and even led for a while, as others started to move up. On the last lap, Meirhaeghe attacked and was never headed, as Dupouey and Hermida chased in vain and they eventually finished in that order. Tomas Frischknecht (Team Ritchey-Yahoo!) and Miguel Martinez rounded out the top five but the day belonged to the Belgian. Meirhaeghe was excited by his victory, and wasn't sure how things would go after yesterday's qualifier. However, he said that he remained focussed and calm, although he thought Hermida was strong enough "to kill me". Dupouey was not quite as enthused, despite his second place. He couldn't match Meirhaeghe and was trying to work with Martinez for World Cup points. However, third placed Hermida had his best result, and was delighted considering his puncture on the third lap. This meant that didn't have enough juice to go with Dupouey and Meirhaeghe on the final climb, but he was satisfied nonetheless. Tim Maloney's view In the men's race, Fullana's Belgian teammate Filip Meirhaeghe was inspired by his billious countrymen and rode a tactically astute race to win over ther re-emerging Christophe Dupouey. Early on, it was Miguel Martinez who made the going with Dupouey, but Meirhaeghe surged up to the leaders on the third lap, then attacked a lap later, taking Dupouey and young Spanish star Jose Antonio Hermida along. A lap later, Meirhaeghe dumped his buddies and soloed in for the win and a bottle of Trappist beer on the podium!
