18th Canberra Tour - NEAustralia, April 28-30, 2000The Stages
PreviewThe Canberra Tour is one of Australia's best known and toughest mini-tours, being held over three days (two for the lower grades), usually in April/May. Past winners include Gary Sutton, Scott Steward, Tony Gaudry, Nathan O'Neill and Peter Milostic in the men, and Kathleen Shannon, Kathy Watt, Tracey Gaudry (nee Watson) and Anna Wilson in the women. The first day is simply a 6.1 km prologue for the elite men and women, but it's on the second and third days that the test begins. Day two is a split day, with the men covering two hilly 75 kilometre stages, and the women a 38 and a 75 kilometre stage. This day often sees a lot of riders legless by the end. However, the hardest stage is the final one on Sunday - 148 kilometres out to Namadgi National Park and back for the men, and 108 kilometres for the women. The extra 30 kilometres that the men do contain two very tough climbs: Fitz's hill (2 km at 15%) and one beyond this of similar difficulty. Then you have to come back, and it's not flat... Peter Milostic will not be there in the A grade men to defend his title, but Kathy Watt will be in the women, and should take it in the absence of riders such as Gaudry, Wilson and the majority of the AIS road team.
