Each 40km lap includes 10km of good, solid climbing. Excellent conditions, mild, sunshine, a light breeze - would that the whole season could be so. A grade was reported to be a very negative race with no real action up to the final sprint. Leading home the charge was James Taylor (Ashburton Cycles) who won the kick by a small margin ahead of Murray Fenwick (Bike Land). Ben Day (Merida), winner of last weeks 150km Lang Lang race held on for third with Anthony DiBattista (Musashi) fourth. The 25 starters in B grade rode a quick tempo throughout with eventual winner Russell Newnham escaping at the top of the final climb of the day. Never achieving more than a 100 metre lead Newnham was fortunate that those behind were busy countering each other rather than riding him down. Mal Sawford took the field sprint a bare two seconds behind Newnham, U17 national track champ Mark French displayed his versatility placing third from Geoff Watson. C grade's 45 riders took to the hills intent on dropping the sprinters but failed to account for a B grade refugee - Darren Cathie. Back to B grade goes Darren who beat Paul Kennedy, Luke French and Jason Plowman in a tough road sprint. Repeat placings for Kennedy and Plowman may see further promotions on the horizon. Only 19 in D grade that was sadly split by a serious fall in roadside gravel in the first 10km. 57yo David Bolton suffered a broken pelvis and Paralympic tandem stoker Christine Fischer broke a collarbone. Fischer is determined this set back will not affect her chances in Sydney 2000 and intends to train Monday on the stationary bike! John Wright won the first road race he entered after working steady turns with veteran Ivan Collings, Simon Clark trailed in third with Bettina Terry fourth in a display of grit finishing alone.
