The GP Fogliano, an Italian U23 national event, was held in showery weather with low temperatures. The course covered 2 laps of a fairly demanding circuit followed by 4 laps of a tough 20km circuit.

GP Citta di Castello

Italy, April 2, 2000

The weather turned for the better on the following day and it was 20 degrees and sunny. The course contained 7 major climbs and the action started from the gun.

From an Australian point of view, the team rode an excellent race and were present in every break. Allan Davis showed a return to form getting in every major move for the first 100km.

On the final circuit it was Baden Cooke, Michael Rogers, Mark Roland (Pitti Shoes) and Scott Davis who were in the action, trying to mow down a group that escaped at the 110 km mark.

As the group continued to split Michael Rogers proved to be Australia's strongest rider, finishing 8th, a minute and a half down on eventual winner, David Trattini of Sintofarm. Baden Cooke punctured at a crucial moment and had to chase back on, and did not figure in the final placings.
