The event, based around the picturesque village of Bishops Waltham in the south of the country, is run over two days and this year the Saturday stage was the first Premier Calendar event to be held in the wet. The conditions however didn't dampen the spirits of the riders with the race. First event of the race was a crash that brought down quite a few riders including many of the fancied riders for the overall such as Rob Hurd. Rumour has it, a rider from a well known squad swerved to avoid a dead rat and brought down a load of riders. After the crash had helped to split the field, Gordon McCauley applied the pressure and despite now working full time importing cycle equipment, his form was such that the attacks helped to split the field even more, dragging around 25 riders clear. In the run in to the finish, Julian Winn managed to get away and was soon joined by Gordon McCauley and the inform Aarron McCaffrey with Julian winning the sprint to take the leaders yellow jersey from McCaffrey and a resurgent McCauley. The second stage, a 7km time trial, held in dry and cool conditions early on Sunday morning around the high street of Bishop's Waltham, saw the riders starting "Tour de France" style from the back of a truck to ride a triangular course complete with a cobbled section (albeit a fairly smooth set of cobbles). In the end, it was a battle between the high profile pursuiters Chris Newton and former World junior pursuit champion Bradley Wiggins with Newton winning by 7 seconds while leader from stage one, Julian Winn, came in more than 30 seconds down to lose his jersey to Newton. This left the Newton with the leader's jersey and a confident McCauley in 2nd position only 11 seconds down after an excellent time trial. With a few hours rest, the riders were back on their bikes for a tough 90 miles in the Hampshire country side. The early pace was set by Mark Lovatt who was very prominentt in attack but when it came to the business end of the race, a group containing the leaders in the overall were at the head of affairs. All except Aaron McCaffrey, who punctured and after a long wheel change, only managed to get back to the convoy. No further though and he pulled out. After 4 races where he has made the vital break in all events, this was a cruel blow to a rider who was looking good for a top placing in the overall. Aaron next week rides the Tour of Malta. With 10 miles to go, Gethin Butler attacked and came thundering through the village high street with a small lead. He was soon joined by Belgian based Rob Hurd and the two held off the main pack for the remainder of the stage with Hurd attacking Butler in the closing stages to win alone, and Butler doing enough to clinch second. After the bonuses and times were added up, it was Newton on top again despite a top class field and although there were a number of absentees such as overall Premier Calendar leader, Wayne Randle and second and national champion, John Tanner, it is hard to see anyone who could have beaten Newton was in superb form. With the time trial being the vital stage as well, very few would bet on anyone beating him in an event that he is world class at. This begs the question: where all the sponsors have gone in British cycling? The sport at that level is very poor, not in available riders but in sponsors putting up enough cash for those good enough to ride as full time professionals. This could be due to a number of factors, but it is sad to see such high profile riders not being able to attract the type of sponsorship they need to raise their (and cycling's) profile in this country. Next week, Chris defends his Premier Calendar lead in the tough and UCI ranked Archer Grand Prix which will have a class field including Collstrop's Roger Hammond. Results Stage 1: 1.
