Polisportiva CavrieServie, Italy, April 16, 2000 By Karen Kureck There are 3-4 flat races a year in Italy and this Sunday was the 2nd one. 25 laps of a 3.2km circuit with lots of turns and about 2km of the course was on roads about 4 bike widths wide. Given our team's success last weekend, our strategy was simple: don't let anything go anywhere and don't work in any breaks. The field was about 110 riders and they called all the riders and teams to the start line in order of race number. Our numbers were 100-110, meaning we lined up dead last! Not ideal on a course like this. I made it a personal goal to get to the front by the end of the first lap which I did. The early laps were kind of sketchy. Valentina unfortunately crashed early on. She was OK, but it was not a course where you could really hope to chase back on and she retired early. GAS also was set up for a sprint with Greta Zocca, but they had the strength and numbers to make an aggressive race and if not tire out the other sprinters, at least tire out their teams, meaning us! This was Luperini's first time back in the peleton this year. Somehow her 8 month suspension got lifted after 3 months. She looked leaner as well as happier than she has the last 2 years and rode at the front all day: unusual for her in a flat race. The attacks were fast and furious and it was basically up to Svetlana ("Buba") and I to cover them all. It was a lot of work, but one or the other of us we managed to be in every break. The hardest times for me were when I had to go after Pregnolato. We got a gap on the field twice and she wouldn't give up until I caught her wheel. She wanted me to work with her but I couldn't. With 3 laps to go, somehow a group of about 8-10 riders escaped and both Buba and I were there. It wasn't so much of a break as a group of riders off the front attacking each other. Sara Felloni (Alpha Lum) was there, Pregnolato and V. Cappellotto from GAS, Staguskaya from Fanini and a few others. Going through the start finish on the bell lap however, the remains of the field (40 riders or so) was back together. A. Cappellotto took a flyer with 2 km to go and I brought her back. With 1 km to go, the GAS train started rolling. Buba and I were pretty wasted by this point and the rest of our team was gone except for Giovanna. GAS still had the power of numbers and their train got the edge, giving Zocca an airmchair ride to the finish for victory. Staguskaya was 2nd and Troldi 3rd.
