Jon Clay wins the Lancaster Grand Prix in style

The Lancaster Grand Prix, an event held since 1974, was this year run over 106 miles and won by Jon Clay (Private - SLRM), a result which lifted him to second in the Premier Calen dar table. With a lap to go, around 10 minutes of racing, it appeared that the finish would be decided by a 12 up sprint but Clay attacked with just over a mile to go and held off a determined challenge from Linda McCartney rider Huw Pritchard, who hesitated slightly before attacking himself to chase Clay home a few seconds ahead of third place getter Chris Newton and what was left of the 12 riders who had dominated the latter half of the race.

The race winning break was started by Mike Jones (Robert Grinsell Travel) and Paul Mills (Edwardes) on the first lap and they were away on their own for a few miles before being joined by a small groups of riders that would eventually form the race winning break. Behind, the peloton was holding the breaks lead to around a minute and half despite the riders in the lead working well together.

The race was being held in ideal conditions with only a little wind and the sun shining brightly, a contrast to the days before when there was constant heavy rain in Hertfordshire. The ideal conditions helped keep the race together and although the small climbs helped cause a number of splits at the end, despite the speed, the difference between the front break and the main peloton was only around 3 minutes.

With 3 laps to go of the small circuit, the break, full of class riders including former world junior pursuit champion Bradley Wiggins, last years Premier Calendar winner Gordon McCauley and fresh from a 2nd place and a stage win in Spain the week before - Matt Illingworth, the break was being hunted down by a group which had split from the main peloton. This chase group included then Premier Calendar leader, Andy Lyons among others.

The break however, realising they were being reeled in, poured on the pressure again which soon had a number of riders in trouble including Mike Jones, one of the riders who started the break. Standing on the finishing circuit, it was easy to see the pressure starting to tell on the riders as the once large peloton was starting to splinter as the chase to bring the break back reached boiling point. In the end however, the break managed to hold off the chase group with Clay and Pritchard nipping off the front to take the top placings while Chris Newton outsprinted the rest of the break to take over the lead on the Premier Calendar.

After the race finished, a tired Gordon McCauley (he used another word to describe how he felt ...) was initially surprised by the way the main peloton had split in the chase for the lead group. He said that "it wasn't a tactical error on his part that he didn't go with Clay. I simply didn't have the legs and when Clay went, I thought 'thank god, I won't have to try and hold his wheel when he goes through anymore' ".

In talking to race commentator Mick Clarke from Sport and Publicity after the race, 3rd placegetter, Chris Newton, confirmed he wasn't actively pursuing a win the Premier Calendar table. He did confirm he would be riding the Girvan stage event in Scotland over Easter but after that he did not have any plans to speak of.

His main goal is to make the track team for the Olympics. You did however get the impression that he is deeply disappointed that despite what he called the "conflict" within the McCartney team, he didn't have a place on a team as a paid rider and paid tribute to his wife who is having to support him while he tries to get a sponsor. Newton rode a number of big races last year including the Grand Prix de Nations where he was 14th and was also 4th on the last stage of the Tour Trans Canada as well as 25th overall.

A number of people at the race called into question the fact that he isn't receiving funding from the sports governing body as he is clearly one of the best riders in the country (look at the premier calendar table for proof of that) and his performances here in the UK and last year in UCI races, help back that up.

Once again, it goes to highlight the sorry state the sport is in here at the top end. While the lower category races (3/4) are very well supported, the top end is quite light. The printed media go on about how wonderful it is with more riders than ever but the grass roots supporter tells a different story, especially those who go to the events where the top riders can be seen to be hurting from a lack of big sponsorship.

As Chris Newton said when being interviewed, all he could do was go out and win races and make it pay that way but even then, looking at the prize list for a top UK event, where the majority of money seems to go in organising costs, a top 10 place for a rider is lucky to pay for the petrol and entry fee costs.

Anyone thinking that the sport here is on the up should only look at the number of top riders riding as private members and not in a well organised professional team. The media in this country is partly to blame for that of course, as a sponsor only puts money into a team if they think they can get some benefit from it. However, when the UK cycling press carries mostly pictures of European pros on its cover and very little coverage of the plight of the UK riders, is it any wonder we don't have sponsors. Racing on the TV is now non-existent as well.

Perhaps the development of Internet Sports Networks will help change things so riders like Gordon McCauley can race bikes for a living instead of having to start a business so he could stop living off his wife's income. Instead of defending his Girvan crown next week, Gordon will riding mountain bike events closer to home.

Another fact worth remembering about the UK racing scene is that when a World Cup race comes these shores (Rochester was the last), you get crowds numbering tens of thousands but for premier calendar events, a few hundred. Sad but true. Even sadder, is that the Premier Calendar Trophy, once a revered honour, is now dismissed by many of the top riders who cannot afford to compete the length and breathe of the country.

All that said, the Lancaster Grand Prix was as normal, a well run race with great police escorts, lots of marshall's, a course with all the corners having arrows and so on plus a very good sports complex as a HQ. Congratulations to Whitewebbs CC and organiser Brian Corneloues as well as the sponsor, Mercedes dealer, Lancaster Hertford.
