Verona: Corso Porta Nuova, 11 laps/178.7 km

Route Description

The beginning of this city-circuit of 16.25 km is completely level, containing several corners for 1.3 km. This is followed by 5.6 km of slight undulations which reach a height of 170 metres (at San Leonardo) where the Torricelle climb starts. This is a 113 m climb in 1.4 km with an average gradient of 8.07% (maximum: 9%), and two hairpins and two right-handers have to be negotiated.

The next section is 4.4 km downhill with variable road width (between 4.5 and 6 metres), and a couple of turns, finishing at an altitude of 60 m. Following this, there are 3.55 level kilometres on a wide road. The final kilometre is along Via Raggio di Sole - a right bend sweeps round at 850 m from the finishing line with a final flat, straight finishing stretch on an 8-metre-wide smooth road.

The course is quite technical, especially up the climb, and this will see a large thinning out of the bunch on the first few laps. It will suit a strong, aggressive rider with good bike skills in order to stay near the front early on. The final few laps will be punishing and we will likely see a small break ride away. The winner in Verona will certainly be a worthy world champion.
