Info Treviso: Piazza dei Signori - Piazza Duomo, 25.8 kmsRace report: The favourite takes the goldSwiss rider and favourite Fabian Cancellara won the gold medal in the Junior Mens Time Trial in Treviso with a time of 30 minutes 36 seconds. Cancellara, a Swiss national of Italian descent, was defending champion and second on the UCI ranking list after German Mark Schneider. What a diference a year makes. Last year Cancellara won the title with only a couple of seconds. Today in Treviso he smashed all competitors and averaged over 50 kph! No rainbow curse here! He covered the relatively flat 25.85 kilometre course in 50.67 kmh in fairly calm and slightly overcast conditions. In second place was the Russian, Rouslan Kaioumov, some 42.7 seconds behind, while German rider Christian Knees took out the bronze, another 6.9 seconds in arrears. The Italian riders Dario Benenati and Maurizio Biondi filled out fourth and fifth positions, respectively, while the Australian rider Darren Rolfe came in 1.36.9 behind the leader in ninth place. Cancellara, born on March 18, 1981, has dominated Swiss junior cycling this year and won the swiss Championships after a long solo break. The other sixteen victories before the World's are: Rénes, Schwarzhäusern, Rund um die Rigi, ITT in Lugano, Berner Rundfahrt, Kings stage of Giro di Toscana, Memorial Jean Brun, Meyrin, Swiss Championships, Schynbergrundfahrt, GC, prologue and ITT in Waadland-Rundfahrt, GP Vögeli ITT Mountain race Bowil - Chuderhüsi, Sursee ITT; and Kriterium Ostermundigen. Cancellara is also second on the UCI ranking list after German Mark Schneider, who will start seven minutes ahead of the Swiss. Other interesting riders: Bernhard Eisel of Austria, who recently won the UCI-ranked Bank Austria Jugendtour amongst many top squads. Polish rider Lukacz Bodnar, who came second in the 15 km ITT of the same race, beating Mark Schneider. Riders from non European countries have a harder time to make it on the UCI list, since all the races are held in Europe. Last years fifth in Valkenburg, Michael Creed (USA) will riding again and also we should look out for Darren Rolfe of Australia who had a good ITT in the Austrian race. And then there are always the odd(!) French, Italian, Belgian and Dutch riders. Risking a chauvinist label, I would like to say that Swede Petter Renäng will set the standard of the race. He goes out as seventeenth of the 65 riders. Renäng fell in the Austrian ITT stage, lost a minute, but was still fourth in the GC and is a very good time triallist even if he prefers a few more hills than Treviso can offer.
