As it Happened

Lap 1

(Remember to refresh often to see the latest standings)

They're away! The weather is clear, fairly still and slightly cloudy.

The first time up the hill and it's Canada's Genevieve Jeanson who puts the hammer down. She gets away and only the German, Trixi Worrack is able to hold her wheel.

Tactics: go hard, early and often.

Lap 2

At the moment, there is a break of two - Canada's Genevieve Jeanson and Germany's Trixi Worrack are in the lead. A two minute gap to the peleton, who are essentially complete.

End of lap two, and the two are still away and increasing their lead. This looks ominous for the rest of the field - only 32.5 km to go. I'd say at this point the bunch is going for the bronze.

After 2 laps, the average speed: 36.804 km/h
Gap to the bunch: 1:49

Lap 3

Some sunshine has broken through. There is a chase group of two trying to bridge up to the leaders: Italian Noemi Cantele and Magdalena Sadlecka (Poland).

The gap from the leaders to the main bunch is 1:48. Unsure how close the chase group is.

Lap 4

They're on the final lap. Genevieve Jeanson and Trixi Worrack are still away with a comfortable gap of 1:50 to Cantele (Ita) and Sadlecka (Pol), who have a further 25 seconds to the bunch.

The rest of the Polish team are sitting on the front, trying to slow things down.

Jeanson will try to drop Worrack on the climb and is the better climber of the two, but the German still looks strong.

Jeanson has attacked on the climb! She's dropped Worrack and has a gap of 17 seconds to the German. the Italian Noemi is just sitting on Sadlecka from Poland - they are still 2 mins from Jeanson. The bunch has not caught the two chasers.

Jeanson is looking good for a dual gold medal, and Worrack should hold on for the silver.

Worrack makes a great comeback on the descent and almost catches Jeanson. However, Jeanson's time trialling skills do the job and she holds on to win by just 8 seconds! What a ride from Jeanson!

In third place, the Italian Noemi Cantele beats Magdalena Sadlecka from Poland. Italy gets they're first medal for the Championships. In fifth place is Anna Skawinska, again from Poland some 5 minutes back.

When interviewed on Italian TV, bronze medallist Noemi Cantele "couldn't believe how quickly Jeanson attacked. I wasn't ready for it so early," she said.

Final Result

1. Genevieve Jeanson (Can)	1.47.32 (Av: 36.4 km/h)
