Mario Cipollini did it again. Two days ago he had no wins from 3 and people were talking. Now he has 2 from 5 including a win in the fastest ever stage and he is looking like a king again. Once again Stage 5 came down to a mass sprint - 5 from 5 so far. A typical first week. Slow start, an attack, and then a big finish late in the afternoon to excite the big crowds who come to see the best sprinters go fast at the end.

But the commentators are asking whether this is different to previous Tours. This is afterall mean't to be the "revival" Tour to take cycling out of its doping era. We would expect the speed to be lower and the peloton to be more split. But again this stage was very fast (233.5 kms in 41.638 km/h) and the bunch was together. Some doubt the revival.

Charly Mottet, who is the official car following the race, reflected on the performances to date: "In two days, the Tour is virtually over for some of the riders. Once the sprints are over the Tour heads towards the Alps. The sprinters give everything in the first week. They know they are not going to finish and do not have to worry about conserving anything for the mountains."

Mottet also noted that the sprints are safer this year: "The general conditions are more favourable - the roads are in good condition and wide. The sprinters are thus able to express themselves. Compared to previous years there is not as much nervousness in the peloton and therefore not as many falls."

Stage 5 finished in the centre of Amiens after a long, straight windup. Erik Zabel, who is now the focus of the press - as a sprint failure, tried to resurrect his Tour by leading the sprint out. He doesn't appear to be the sprinter he was. His move was premature and he had to settle for 5th. He also probably paid the price of a long chase to get back on after puncturing 12 kms out. He was aided by his teammates (Bolts, Elli and Hundertmark) but the chase was fast and tiring.

Steels came out of the left, close to the fences, and looked to have the sprint. But then from the centre, Cipollini (winning his 10th Tour stage) came through to win. His arms waved and he looked every bit the champion. Steels was gracious in defeat.

So far in the Tour, the attacking moves have all failed. Each day a move has been made and each day it has been run down. Today, ten riders went clear early after only 4 kms (before Chartres) - Durand, Marichal, van Bon, Hundertmarck, Brochard, Piccoli, Voigt, Gouvenou, Bessy, Secchiari. They built a lead of 6.15 by km 28. The gap was slowly whittled away as the peloton past the west side of Paris. Piccoli attacked with Von Bon and they were joined by Carlos Da Cruz and the Swede Magnus Backstedt. They worked together until the outskirts of Amiens. The group were caught with 10 kms to go with Backstedt the last one reeled in with 5.5 kms to go.

Italian Mario Cipollini (Saeco) saw his win today as a carbob copy of his success in Stage 4. He told the press afterwards: "I’m achieving part of my objectives, since I already have two stages, in only five sprints. It’s not too bad, but from now on and until Sunday, until the individual time trial in Metz, I’m going to try to take the leader’s yellow jersey, something I have done before (1993 two days and 1997 four days). Another one of the challenges is to try and finish. This is my sixth Tour and I have not yet finished it. I think that this time it might be easier since there aren’t as many mountains."
