For the second time in two days, Tom Steels controlled the mass sprint to win his 6th Tour stage. The race was very active today and was set up for a very exciting sprint by the stronger teams. The summer weather and coastal atmosphere has given the first week of the Tour a nice feel and a welcome relief from the black doping cloud that has been hanging over it. Jean-Marie Leblanc looks to be a happier man at the present.

Despite the obvious unsolved issues in cycling, the crowds have come out in force in Brittany to give the riders a lot of support. Daniel Baal, French Cycling Federation president said: "I have a feeling that the Tour is going well. There are still problems - that is for sure. But we will work on them gradually. If one looks in the rear view mirror we can see a considerable amount against doping has already been put in place since the Tour of 1998. This is especially apparent in the attitudes of the riders - that is most significant."

Many riders in the peloton were carrying injuries and soreness as a result of the disastrous crossing of the Gois during the second stage. But there was also happiness. Lylian Lebreton stopped on the roadside to greet his family. And Frédéric Guesdon, was out on the attack in his home region with an unknown Italian rider Massimo Giunti for around 121 kms.

Sadly, Spaniard Javier Pascual Llorente was forced to retire. He had a badly cut body and a damaged wrist and he stayed at the back of the peloton for around 40 minutes but eventually was unable to continue. Another local rider Jacky Durand, who would have loved to be on the attack, was forced to lie low while his injuries recovered a little.

There is a statement in cycling that while the season is long, the true ranking of the top sprinters is made during the Tour de France and to a lesser extent the Giro and the Vuelta. The big combines certainly work to get their riders in positions where they can take the glory.

Stage 3 was very fast (average 43.310 km/h) but the riders did have a favourable wind. The attack of Guesdon and Giunti was run down 37.5 kms before the end as the Casino team wound up the tempo to keep their sprinter Jaan Kirsipuu in the frame and also in yello. The finale was not particularly notable but it was fast.

The crowd saw the peloton flying down the sloping streets of Laval on the banks of Mayenne. The only incident was Italian Moreno Di Biase crashing into the barriers on the street circuit. Nicola Minali was hoping Di Biase would lead him out. But the stage was not really influenced by the Italian's fall.

On the final straight, Jimmy Casper tried to take advantage of some heavy work from his teammates in La Française des Jeux - Stéphane Heulot, Christophe Mengin, Damien Nazon and the Dane Lars Michaelsen. But the young rider from the Picardy region was too impatient and went too soon. He came in at 6th behind the Belgian Tom Steels. Casper is only 21 years and will win some of the big sprints before too long.

Tom Steels:

Tom Steels got his 6th stage victory, his second since the beginning of the Tour following his win at Saint Nazaire the day before. The Belgian rider started collecting stage wins in 1998, in Dublin, Cap d'Agde, Neuchatel and on the Champs Elysee in Paris. Steels had 47 victories, excluding criteriums since his professional debut in 1994.

Born on September 2nd 1971 in Saint-Gillis-Waas in Belgium, he is 1.79 metres tall and weighs 73 kilos. He is married without children.

His teams have been: Vlaanderen 2002 (1994 and 1995), Mapei (from 1996). He is 23rd in the UCI world rankings.
