Stage 5, ITT - Svrljig - Nis, 33 kms

Report:

The yellow jersey syndrome in Serbia

22 year-old Kjell Carlström, riding for Swedish Team Wirsbo, won his first ITT ever on the fifth stage of Tour of Serbia, wearing the yellow jersey that he won yesterday. Carlström is, to be polite, an ordinary time trialist but had an average of 49,832 kms per hour on the 33 kms from Svrljig to Nis beating his main opponent Slovakian Slobodnik by 19 seconds.

"I can't belive it's true. I've never won an ITT before," laughed a happy Carlström. I just gave all - I had not to lose to much to the other top contenders," he said.

With two stages to go, the margins are 19 seconds do Slobodnik, 1.20 to Dvorcisk and 2.26 to Russian favourite Sedun.

"It will take lots of hard work to defend the jersey. The two remaining stages aren't easy and the pros seldom likes to be beaten by amateurs. And there's also some UCI-points at stake so our team really have to do a good show. We will try to let some people from the back of the field go away to get the bonuses, and if we can take it easy and stay cool we're going to make it," said team manager Patrick Serra.
