Junior ITT: Samanta Gialdini, Daniela Lucchetta, Zarina Ronchetti. No Virenque, JaJa in French team France will be present at the World Championships without Laurent Jalabert & Richard Virenque, two of the most prominent cyclists from France. The French Cycling Federation didn't allow Laurent Jalabert to participate, because he didn't follow the same medical controls as the rest of the French riders. In addition, Jalabert has not recuperated from the fall he suffered on August 1st at la Vuelta a Castilla-León. Jalabert started La Vuelta a Espana, but didn't finish it. About Richard Virenque, the FFC explained that it was a purely technical decision (he's clearly not up to Pascal Lino's standard), although they said that the doors were open for future occasions. They have retained 1997 champion, Laurent Brochard whose record speaks for itself. MEN: Elite Road Race: (Twelve riders from) Stephane Berges, Denis Leproux, Pascal Lino, Frederic Bessy, Pascal Chanteur, David Delrieu, Gilles Maignan, Laurent Brochard, Christophe Moreau, Frederic Guesdon, Stephane Heulot, Christophe Mengin, Jean Cyril, Jean Michel Tessier, Frederic Finot, Cedric Vasseur, Nicolás Jalabert & Christophe Rinero. The final selection will take place after Paris - Tours, on October 3. Elite ITT: Gilles Maignan & Christophe Moreau. WOMEN: Road Race: Jeannie Longo, Elisabeth Chevanne, Laurence Restoin, Siverine Desbouys & Giraldine Loewenguth. ITT: Jeannie Longo & Marion Clignet.Dutch Team for WC Jeroen Blijlevens and Jan Boven will debut in the World Championships after coach Gerrie Knetemann announced his selection. The others are: Michael Boogerd, Leon van Bon, Maarten den Bakker, Erik Dekker, Marc Lotz, Aart Vierhouten, Steven de Jongh, Tristan Hoffman, Servais Knaven and Bart Voskamp. Knetemann selected Dekker and Voskamp for the ITT. In other news, Steven de Jongh reached an agreement with his current team, TVM/Farm Frites, that he can leave. He will probably sign with Rabobank for two years. Women busted French newspaper, L'Equipe reports that Diana Ziliute. The Lithuanian winner of this years Tour de France Feminin was found to have a caffeine level of 15.85%. Both she and the Italian Gabriella Pregnolato were found to be over the limit in a test conducted in France, and Pregnolato was promptly kicked out of the Italian World's team. Since then however, both women have subsequently been cleared, obviously due to a mistake in the tests which, as all athletes know, are almost always in error. On a more positive note, the UCI and the Italian Federation have confirmed two cheats. The second and sixth place getters at the Italian National Championships, Sonia Rocca and Nadia Cristofoli were found to have traces of ephedrine and nandrolone in their respective samples. In France, the FFC are now questioning Dr Nedelec about his practices. Remember that the good doctor was the one who testified in the Festina affair, which eventually led to FFC president Daniel Baal being questioned. It seems he wants his own back. Baal, in a very noble gesture would like to start the new millennium with a clean slate, proposing that all cycling records are wiped out in the year 2000. "Let's put the clocks back to zero," he said. "It would be a strong sign that cycling has entered a new era. An era when doping has been definitively rejected, and the sport will once again be respected." I'm sure Sir Hubert Opperman would agree. Lombardi stays with Telekom Fast man, Giovanni Lombardi is staying with Telekom next season, according to boss Walter Godefroot. Erik Zabel will now have three riders to help him in the sprint: Gianmatteo Fagnini, Danilo Hondo and Giovanni Lombardi. US RacingMercury sweep Coconut GroveAfter Gordon Fraser's crash last week in Houston, team Mercury rebounded in fine style by snaring the top 4 in the Great Coconut Grove Classic, in front of an estimated crowd of 10,000. Mercury were aggressive from the start, sending David Clinger up the road along with Scott Moninger, quickly gaining a 1 minute gap. They were pursued by a group of 20 riders containing US Postal rider Kevin Livingston, Jonas Carney, and 4 riders from the Smart Talk team. Clinger and Moninger were slowly brought back by the chase group, who were spurred on by the crowd. It came down to 10 seconds when Mercury riders Fraser and Sayers jumped across to the break. The three Mercury riders in the break - Clinger, Sayers, and Fraser dropped Moninger and team time trialled away from the rest of the field. The victory eventually went to Mike Sayers, and Mercury rounded out the top four with John Peters taking the bunch sprint. McCormack wins Cyclo-cross US National Cyclo-cross champion Frank McCormack (Saturn) is back on the winning trail when he won his first Cyclo-cross race of the 1999/2000 season. After a crash in May destroyed his 1999 road season, he has now come back to concentrate on his speciality, the Cyclo-cross. The Saturn rider won Sunday's race solo after dropping break-away partner Chris Peck (Cannondale/Wheelworks) at the last set of barriers. The two had attacked early in the race along with Mike Yozell, quickly getting clear of the field. McCormack attacked Peck towards the end, then dropped him to win by 10 seconds.
Farm Frites signs BrunenDutch rider Yvonne Brunen (Greenery Hawk Team) has signed with Farm Frites-Hartol for next season. "When I like, I will stay longer", she said.Br¸nen: "I looked for a professional team. Farm Frites will do a lot more international races next season, and I can work for the team leader Leontien van Moorsel. I'll have more chances in the small stage-races." Farm Frites-Hartol has signed two talents from the Young Orange-team too: Esther van de Helm and Sharon van Essen. Hammond for Collstrop British pro Roger Hammond, riding for the past few years for the Palmans-Ideal team, has signed for another Belgian team, Collstrop, next year. Gotta love those kermesses... The British "neo-pro team", Linda McCartney are currently trying to sign some Danish talent from the Acceptcard team in order to boost their ranking for next year. Nothing is confirmed as yet, but they hope to have some names within the next week.
Vandenbroucke for king?In the Belgian newspaper, "Gazet van Antwerpen" several riders, team directors and press give their opinions as to why Frank Vandenbroucke will win the World Road Title next week. Spot the odd ones out.Manolo Saiz (ONCE) "VDB, unless it is true that he went out with a girl until 4 o'clock in the morning after his first stage victory. He is super strong, super explosive, but he seems to lack the ability to concentrate. He needs a director who can make him toe the line." Jean-Luc Vandenbroucke (Lotto) "If cycling were an exact science, then definately Frank. Fortunately, it isn't so I choose Tchmil. Because of his professionalism." Fabrizio Fabbri (Mapei) "VDB, if he does not lose his focus after the Vuelta." Johan Bruyneel (US Postal) "VDB. If you see how much stronger he is than the others, then there is no doubt. You have favourites who show that they are ready, but he shows that with his condition he has got a lot extra. Even if he is riding less strongly in Verona, he will still be the best. He only has one enemy and that is himself." Kurt Van De Wouwer (Lotto) "VDB and I am going to help him." Frans Van Looy "I do not believe he (VDB) will ever win the Tour, but I do think he will be world champion. The rider who wins in Verona will be graceful and explosive." Rudy Pevenage (Telekom) "To win in Verona you need to be as audacious as he is. I would not understand it if the whole Belgian team did not ride for Frank. Don't count on Ullrich. He will be in there but at the crucial moment he will miss the experience in one day races to pull it off." (I love the team spirit in Telekom) The Spanish press "Vandenbroucke, but there is a real danger that the Belgians will not work together and will ruin it for each other. Like the Italians." Oscar Camenzind "At this moment VDB, but Verona is still 14 days away. That is long enough to lose your condition, or to find it." Hendrik Redant (TVM) "Since the peak condition of a rider lasts for 3 weeks and Frank has had it for 4 days, he is the top favourite. The only problem is that everyone knows it." Adrie Van Houwelingen (Rabobank) "Michael Boogerd, because he showed on Saturday the same explosiveness as VDB." Personally, I'm going for Museeuw.
