First report: The Russian strikes - againThe Russian Dimitri Konyshev from Mercatone Uno is in fine form at present after winning the 47th edition of Coppa Sabatini in Pecciolo near Pisa. The descisive move came 55 km from the finish when nine riders got away. Giuseppe Petito gave up and the octet stayed together until 5 kms from the finish in Peccioli. Marco Serpellini attacked but the Russian veteran reacted immediately and finally defeated Serpellini in the sprint. The rest of the group split in the final climb to Peccioli and Mauro Zanetti came in third alone at six seconds followed by Max Sciandri at 13 seconds and then a group of three riders, including Peter Van Petegem (Bel), Niklas Axelsson (Swe) and Pascal Richard. The race was held over nine laps of a 21.35 km circuit, followed by a final circuit of 12.1 km, making up the total distance of 198.85 km. There were two climbs on the first circuit, one from Selvatelle to Terricciola, about 4,5 kms long and the the steep climb into the town of Peccioli - 1.1 km long and rising 75 meters, with the finishing line situated at the top. The 33 year-old Russian cyclist with Mercatone also won the Grand Prix Fourmies on September 12 in northern France, ending a 6-year run of Italian victories. Full results to come. Preview:The Coppa Sabatini, raced around the town of Peccioli in Tuscany will be an important race for those wanting to be selected for the World Championships held in just a few weeks time. The race is contested over nine laps of a 21,35 kms circuit, followed by a final circuit of 12,1 kms, making the total distance 198,85 kms. There are two climbs on the first circuit, one from Selvatelle to Terricciola, about 4,5 kms long and the the steep climb into the town of Peccioli - 1,1 km long and rising 75 meters, with the finishing line situated at the top. This year's race will see most of the major teams contesting, although many of the top riders are riding in the Tour of Spain. All the Italians will be very motivated for this event, although Belgians Johan Museeuw, Wilifried Peeters and Andrei Tchmil will do their best to upset the likes of Fransesco Casegrande and Franco Ballerini. In an interesting switch, there will also be an Australian addition to the Saeco-Cannondale team. Cadel Evans, silver medalist in last week's U-23 World MTB Championships, will be riding in the red garb. Evans rides for Volvo-Cannondale on the mountain bike circuit, and will be looking to make an impression in this race, as he has hinted about riding the road in future.
