Highlights of the Rheinland-Pfalz-Rad-Rundfahrt will be the ITT on the second day at Bad Marienberg, the fourth stage with a 20 percent climb at Erdinger Eller an der Mosel and the fifth stage with its 252 kms from Bitburg to Zweibrücken.

Twenty teams will participate, among them Rabobank with GP Eddy Merckx winners Erik Dekker and Marc Wauters who will be the favourites here. Several previous winners will participate. Bert Dietz and Jörs Reuss of Nürnberger won in 1993 and 1995 respectively. Reuss won the Tour of Saxony a couple of weeks ago. Other favourites. German Torsten Schmidt, last year's third Norwegian Steffen Kjaergaard and his compatriot Svein Gaute Hølestøl, second in 1995, all of them from Danish foreign legion Team Chicky World.

Sprinters to look out for in this edition. Andreas Kappes, Olaf Pollack, Sascha Henrix, Raphael Schweda, Holger Sievers and Cologne's Dutchman Jan Koerts.

During this year's race there will also be a campaign for the earth quake victims of Turkey since the Rheinland Pfalz Red Cross runs two field hospitals in the disaster stricken area.
