Stage 1 - Frankfurt a. M. - Bad Homburg v.d. Höhe, 171.5 kms

The Swede Allan Johannssen of the team Chicky World won the first road stage of Intertnational Hessen Rundfhart from Frankfurt to Bad Hamburg. The 28 year old, already successful this season in the Saxonia route and the route de Normandie-Rundfahrt, won in a three man sprint that included Dutchman Miguel van Kessel and the Norwegian the Bjoernar Vestoel.

The three broke away ten kilometres from the stage finish to come in 11 seconds ahead of the chasing bunch. "I planned to win a stage and I today created that," said Johannssen. Conditions on the stage were made difficult by driving wind and rain which followed the previous day's fine autumn weather.

After 17 km four riders attacked and built up a lead of nearly seven minutes. The quartet included Stefan Steinweg, Thomas Liese, Bjarke Nielsen from Denmark and the Norwegian Ole Sigurd Simensen. The field finally reacted and the group was pulled back after 115 km, but new attacks commenced almost immediately, the only one succeeding was that of Johannssen and his two companions.

Johannssen holds the leader's yellow jersey, while Stefean Steinweg carries the white sprinter's jersey and Thomas Liese carries the jersey for the best climber, according to the report from Germany. Tomorrow's stage runs from Bad Homburg to Höhe - Alsfeld, a distance of 166.5 kms with a few climbs along the way that should sort out the field.
