Women's Sprint

28 year old Frenchwoman, Felicia Ballanger retained her sprint title for the fifth consecutive year, defeating Australia's Michelle Ferris in straight heats in the finals.

Ballanger has been at the top of women's sprint cycling since 1995 and had little trouble keeping her position today. In the first match, she led Ferris throughout the last lap, holding her off to the line. In the second final, Ballanger overpowered Ferris at the beginning of the last lap, putting several lengths into her.

These will be Ballanger's last World Championships, as she is not intending to ride past the Sydney Olympics next year. This served as extra motivation for her and she clearly outclassed Ferris, whom she has beaten in the last three World Championship finals. However, she conceded it wasn't as easy as it looked, despite being in good form. She will be the hot favourite to take out the 500 m time trial tomorrow, while Ferris will hope to add at least another silver medal to her tally

In the ride off for the bronze, it was Canada's Tanya Dubnicoff who triumphed over Chinese rider Yan Wang, again requiring only two heats to do so.
