Stage 7 - October 18 - Ballarat to Hamilton, 183.3 kmsNew leader as riders cop another battering
The longest stage of the tour was once again run under very extreme conditions - howling head and crosswinds lashed the field as they set out from Ballarat on their way to Hamilton. The winds were so strong that the race finished three quarters of an hour behind schedule, and the main bunch were half an hour behind the front group. The critical move came with some 60 km to go, when 19 riders escaped the bunch. These 19 contained the top 9 of 10 on GC, with Australia's Dave McKenzie being the only one to miss out. The rest of the bunch gave up the chase fairly quickly and the gap grew to a massive 27:40 by the end of the stage. Towards the end of the stage, Czech rider Tomas Konecny (Tyrepower) and Danish Nicolai Bo Larsen (Home Jack & Jones) broke clear and held off the rest of the group to the finish. In the end, it was Konecny who triumphed over Bo Larsen, with Konecny's teammate Jan Hruska taking the bunch sprint for third. The Czechs are looking very strong and claim that they are waiting for the hills before the real riding starts! Australia's Robbie McEwen (Jayco - V.I.S) rode a very aggressive race, picking up many time bonus sprints along the way. He accumulated enough time to snatch the lead by a mere 2 seconds from Home Jack & Jones' Michael Blaudzun, with Konecny hovering ominously in third place. The next few stages will probably see a lot of shuffling in the GC when the riders start to hit the climbs. In the sprint competition, Bo Larsen is still leading from McEwen, who is just 4 points behind, with New South Welshman, Peter Milsotic another point back. McEwen is also coming second in the mountains competition behind Blaudzun, showing his remarkable consistency in the tour so far. Results
