Stage 6 - October 17 - Ballarat, 141.4 kmsMcEwen edges closerThousands of spectators crowded around Lake Wendouree in Ballarat for the finish of stage 6, which was a 141 km tour of Ballarat and surrounds. Just after the start, there was a crash involving 8 riders of which eventual stage winner Robbie McEwen was one. Although McEwen had few problems getting back to the pack, his bike was fairly trashed and he had to get some major surgery done do it by his support crew. The tour's press reporter, Rob Gaylard said "His gears weren't working, his brakes weren't working. He then had to have his support crew come up and rescue him virtually to repair his bike and get his team mates to drag him back up to the field to the main peloton." After dealing with this mishap, McEwen was then part of the four man breakaway that won the stage by over a minute from the bunch. Canada's Eric Wohlberg (Aust Post), Ciaran Power (Irl - Latrobe) and Danish Home Jack & Jones rider, Michael Blaudzun formed the remainder of the break, and they finished in this order behind McEwen at the finish. This put Robbie just 9 seconds behind Blaudzun in the overall classification and he will be keen to take the leader's jersey from the Dane before the climbing begins.
