Stage 14 - October 23 - Mirboo North to Leongatha, 48.4 kmsReportThe second stage held on Saturday afternoon from Mirboo North to Leongatha saw Belgian kermesse specialist Bart Heirewegh (Sunsmart) take out a close-fought two-up sprint from Amercian rider John Lieswyn (Australia Post). Heirrewegh and Lieswyn pulled away from the small breakaway group of seven, with Jayco - VIS rider Brad Davidson leading home the remaining five riders at nine seconds. This group also contained Eric De Clercq (Bel) Sunsmart, Alessandro Pozzi (Ita) Caravello, David McKenzie (Aus) City of Melbourne and David Lee (NZ) SEW - Eurodrive - Avanti. Overall, there was only a slight change to the comfortable lead held by Michael Blaudzun, who finished safely in the main bunch some 1.19 after the winner and with all contenders receiving the same finishing time. Italian rider Allesandro Pozzi (Caravello) featured in all four intermediate sprints along the short stage, winning two and placing in the other two, and boosting his winnings in the Most Aggressive Rider Award to $800. He may retire out here. As an indication of his versatility, or the nature of the climbs, Tour de France hero and ace Queensland sprinter Robbie McEwen recovered from his dreadful slump in the ITT earlier that day (where he took nearly an hour to cover 32.8 km), to jump clear and take the only mountain sprint on offer this afternoon. The Queenslander still leads both the sprints and mountains competitions. As for the GC, with only stage remaining it seems the Danish rider will secure his first-ever Sun Tour victory.
