Stage 12 - October 22 - Marysville to Moe, 156.7 kmsGuess who won? EddieThe likelihood of a certain New South Welshman winning a bunch sprint in an Australian road race is well-known phenomenon. In today's stage from Marysville to Moe, Irish rider Dermot Finnigan learnt the folly of under-estimating Eddie Salas (Echuca - Moama) in a two-up sprint, with the wily Australian veteran snatching the stage victory with a perfectly-timed lunge for the line. Unfortunately, Finnigan thought he had the measure of the Australian and threw the two-arm salute to the crowd as he crossed the line, only for Eddie to come under him and win by a tyre's width. Perhaps Finnigan (LaTrobe - Moe) was trying to give the Moe locals something to celebrate, given that he was riding into the main street of Moe wearing the home team strip. The pair had worked well to finish 31 second clear of third-placed American John Lieswyn (Australia Post), with Caravello rider Chris White (Aus) finishing in fourth place another two seconds in arrears. Today's 156.7 km stage from Marysville to Moe was covered in 4.10.01, at an average speed of 39.55 kmh, with four climbs along the way that broke up the main field. At the 50 km mark, Robbie McEwen once again showed his form and was one of four riders to jump clear, and shortly after they were joined by another five. This breakway group included McEwen, Salas, Chris White (Aus) Caravello, John Lieswyn (USA) Australia Post, Christian Heule (Swi) Malaysia Airlines, Finnegan, Tony Bracke (Bel) Sunsmart, Milos Pejcha (Cze) Tyrepower and Rob Reynolds-Jones (GBr) City of Melbourne. They worked together and given that no rider in the group posed a real threat to the overall GC - the bunch was content to let them go. On the third climb of the day at Warragul & Drouin the lead group broke up, where Salas and Finnigan were both dropped. However, they worked together to rejoin the leaders and then rode straight past, building up a lead of nearly 40 seconds with 27 km to go. Their lead varied from 20 to 40 seconds, but they worked together to keep the chasing duo of White and Lieswyn at over 30 seconds, while the remainder of the breakway was swept up by the bulk of the main field, which finished just over two minutes down. Once again there was another crash in the bunch, this time a group of six came down only 20 km from the finish, but only suffered lacerations and all finished. So far, 14 riders have abandoned due to illness or injury. Observers believed the Danish and Czech teams spent the day preserving their respective leaders, Michaal Blaudzon and Tomas Konecny, who are first and second on GC, for tomorrow's all-important Individual Time Trial. After the finish Blaudzon once again praised the two remaining members of his team, while the Czech rider has all four team-mates left. During the latter part of the stage, the Belgians could also be seen at the front of the bunch, working with the Danes to help pull back the time gap to the breakway. But the leading four maintained their space and stayed away on the hilly stage. Despite Salas' formidable local record before and his after short-lived retirement, which included this year's National Road Race Championship, today's win was only his second stage win in the seven tours the 36 year old has completed. Tomorrow, the riders face Stage 13, a32.8 km ITT from Churchill to Mirboo North, and then stage 14, a short road stage from Mirboo North to Leongatha of 48.4 km distance, with four sprints and one climb. Although the former race leader Robbie McEwen is some 27 minutes behind the leaders, the Queensland sprinter leads both the overall sprints and mountains competitions.
