Stage 11 - October 21 - Nagambie to Lake Mountain, 174 kmsKonecny edges closerToday the riders faced one of the toughest tests in the Vichealth Herald Sun Tour, with the 174 km stage between Nagambie and Lake Mountain. The stage contained 4 climbs, with the longest and hardest - the 20 km ascent of Lake Mountain - coming at the end of the stage. In a bold bid to rescue some of the 10 minutes he lost yesterday, Australia's Robbie McEwen (Jayco - VIS) broke away with several others at the 40 km mark of the stage. At one point, it looked as though this move might pay off, as the group gained approximately 6 minutes on the bunch. However, they were reeled in at the bottom of the final climb and the real racing started. Yellow jersey holder, Michael Blaudzun (Jack & Jones) benefited from some excellent work from his remaining 3 teammates and shot to the lead halfway up the mountain with Czech rider and 2nd placed overall, Tomas Konecny going with him. The two powered away to win, although at the finish it was Konecny who outsprinted Blaudzun for some valuable bonus seconds, thereby reducing the gap to him by six seconds on the overall classification. In third place was Australia's Jamie Drew (Jayco -VIS) finishing ahead of Konecny's teammate Jan Hruska, Dane Nicolai Bo Larsen and South Australian Corey Sweet (Echuca-Moama). At the finish, Blaudzun gave credit to his teammates, especially Christian Andersen and Michael Kyneb, who towed him a long way up the climb. 3rd placed Jamie Drew reported that he was within striking distance of the two leaders, but dropped back when they attacked on a flatter part of the climb. Corey Sweet's ride moved him up to sixth overall at 3:25 and he is now the best-placed Australian, just ahead of Canberra's Peter Rogers (Southern Grampians-Hamilton, at 3:31) and Drew at 3:44. Irishman Ciaran Power, who was second overnight at 22 seconds, lost more than a minute on the first two placegetters and is now 1:46 off the pace, just in front of Bo Larsen. Canadian Eric Wohlberg had a terrible day - he started the stage in fourth place 30 seconds, but finished over 4 minutes down due to various mishaps. He is now in 9th place overall at 4:57. The Wohlberg saga: Firstly, he broke the stem bolt on his handlebars and changed bikes with teammate David Pell. Then he punctured at the base of the final 21km climb and fell when another rider came across his front wheel. The icing on the cake was that he was then docked a further 20 seconds and fined $50 for being towed by team manager Len Hammond. Hammond was fined a total of $400 for also towing Wohlberg's teammate John Lieswyn. The stage is certainly set for a tight battle between Blaudzun and Konecny for the $10,000 winners cheque in the remaining four stages. Time bonuses will be crucial, as will the 32 km ITT to be held two stages hence. Corey Sweet Graham Fowler sent us this bio of "Jay's brother", Corey Sweet Call him the quiet achiever or not, but South Australia's Corey Sweet (Echuca - Moama) has won a tour or two in his time. Leading the Australians and sitting quietly in 6th position overall in this year's Herald Sun Tour ready to take any advantage coming his way. Corey has only just returned from Europe after spending his second season away in Germany with rising division 3 team Leonardo Coast. He returned with full color newspaper spreads of his successes in Germany as a testament to his ability. Unlike his better known brother Jay, he often claims his successes from a lone breakaway, as he did to win the 1997 Tour of Wellington. Corey also had the 1998 tour of Wellington in his hand when he punctured, recaught the main field, broke away again but subsequently destroyed his bike when the rear changer went through the rear wheel. He finished the stage some minutes down on a spare bike more suited to Kathy Watt. Although a few Aussie riders are lurking only seconds behind, you can be sure they have a fight in front of them.
