Stage 1, October 14 - Melbourne Criterium, 31.5 kms

Rogers finds a cure for jetlag

The first stage of the VicHealth Herald Sun Tour was a hectic 30-lap criterium through the busy centre of Melbourne, the capital city of Victoria. The stage started with attacks from the second lap, with the bunch showing no sympathy for the riders who arrived stiff and sore at 5am Wednesday morning, direct from the World Road Racing Championships held in Verona last Sunday.

Perhaps they should, as it was one of Australia's representatives in the Elite Mens Road Race, Peter Rogers, who stormed home at the finish to claim the first stage.

The lunchtime crowd of Melburnian office workers looked on as the field settled into the tight corners and fast racing with breaks every few laps - and the main field chasing them down as soon as they started.

With seven laps to go John Lieswyn (Australia Post) made a bid which looked like it could succeed, but with the warm wind picking up in the back strait he was reeled in at five to go. The Canadian Eric Wohlberg (Australia Post) then made a bid to break and this time he was away clear with a strong surge of power.

Wohlberg looked like he was going to hold on till the finish but with one and a half laps to go Rogers made his move, quickly catching Wohlberg and going straight past the tiring Canadian to finish 150 meters ahead. Wohlberg claimed second place and the experienced Kiwi, Graeme Miller (SEW - Eurodrive - Avanti), won the bunch sprint for third.

On the podium, Miller said although he was another year older, he had moved up a place in the first stage so he can't be going too bad.

Wohlburg took the Yellow leader's jersey due to his time bonuses taken earlier in the race.
