Tchmil, Boogerd, Vandenbroucke, van Petegem or Museeuw? That was the question. Marc Wauters was the answer.

Andrei Tchmil, who won this race two years ago, was hoping to grab enough points to secure the World Cup victory, in the second last race of the competition. He succeeded in beating all of the top contenders but Boogerd and Vandenbroucke still have their chance to take the Cup if Tchmil misses out completely in the final race, Giro di Lombardia.

Marc Wauters won the day's race after an attack at Pagode de Chanteloup, a climb 50 kms from the finish. The Belgian Rabobank rider took Italian Gianni Faresin (Mapei-Quick Step) with him, and the duo held a maximum gap of 48" to the chasing peleton. The Belgian finally dropped his partner on a small hill in the closing kilometers to take the win. Faresin though still had the legs to hold off a fast finishing bunch which was led home by Casino's Jaan Kirsipuu (Est).

The fist major break away of the day came from Frédéric Guesdon, Jesper Skibby and Stéphane Berges who gained over four minutes at one stage but were captured at around 165 kms after Rabobank and a strong headwind took their toll. The peleton at this point was now down to 50 riders.

At the Pagode de Chanteloup climb, domestiques Wauters (Rabobank) and Faresin (Mapei) attacked at the 204th kilometer. They slowly increased the gap second by second, and at 220 kms it was 40 seconds. Cofidis and TVM (Vandenbroucke and van Petegem) were doing the main chasing job in the peloton. At the days last sprint in Evres-sur-Indre the gap was 48 seconds.

At the climb up Côte du Crochu at 228 kms, van Petegem and Museeuw tried to escape but Frank Vandenbroucke led the chase to catch them quickly. At the foot of the climb in Epan, 10 kms remaining, the gap to the top duo was still 48 seconds but now Frank Vandenbroucke accelerated with the peleton hanging on and the gap decreased rapidly. But it was too late. Wauters hung the the Italian off in the last kilometers and won by ten seconds to Faresin and fourteen to the peloton.

By finishing 9th, Andrei Tchmil gained another 20 points to increase his lead in the World Cup, but will it be enough to hold off Boogerd (21st) and Vandenbroucke (11th - just two places behind Tchmil), when the Tour of Lombardy comes?

Profile of Marc Wauters

30 year-old Belgian Marc Wauters isn't just any old domestique. This year he has won the Tour of Luxemburg, the Prutour of Great Britain, the Rheinland Pfalz Rundfahrt and the GP Eddy Merckx with Erik Dekker. He is also on the Belgian World Championship squad. This year has been his by far best since he debuted 1991 and his UCI ranking (46th) is his best ever after nine years in the pro peloton.
