Results and Reports for November 8Carnegie-Caulfield Cycling Club Criteriums Victoria, Australia November 7, 1999 Rain again lashed Melbourne on Saturday and many riders saved their strength for a fantastic days racing on Sunday morning with Carnegie-Caulfield. There were 134 starters spread fairly evenly across four grades.30 strong men greeted the starter to contest A grade. Chris Carr tried in vain to take a group away, while the rest of the group seemed content to try little digs but a bunch sprint was on the cards. Coming out of the last corner with 20 riders ducking and weaving everywhere, who else but Stephen Pate should drive up the left gutter and take the prize from Robert Tighello, straight from his Herald-Sun Tour ride. Robert Wilson held off reborn trackie Shaun Collins for the minor placings. In contrast, ten minutes into the B grade race, it was evident that a bunch gallop was out of the question. Having allowed a group of four to slip away early on, the remaining riders made little effort. The escapees worked even turns and never appeared in trouble, the eventual finishing order being Doug Garley, Malcolm Sawford, Peter Homman and Harry Hendon. Colombian Mauro Alvarez led home the C grade group in a fine sprint leaving Leo DiMartino second, David DeAngelos third and U17 national road champ Alan Schnable fourth. Stuart Campbell stepped up to win D grade after being third last Sunday. The race was very nearly stolen in the first lap when a group of five took off from the gun. Despite some concerted attempts to rein them in the break survived until two laps to go. Michael Ford (U15) recovered his composure after contributing to the break and managed a fine second place with Paul Free third from Josh Rogers.
