Finishing 5 seconds behind him was Tour de France stage winner, Robbie McEwen and fellow Queenslander, Nathan O'Neil in third. The deciding break came after 45 minutes when McEwen, Nick Gates, O'Neil, and Ashley Hutchinson attacked the bunch on "Heiko's Hill", named after the former Australian cycling coach. Hutchinson found the pace set by the professional's too tough and dropped back to the main bunch. The remaining three worked well together to maintain the break for the rest of the race. With less than 2 laps to go, Phillips attacked McEwen and O'Neil, and went on to take out the race. "Robbie, Nathan and I really worked well together. It was such a hard race, I was really lucky to get away," said Phillips. "I had to attack at the end, so I gave it everything. I think they were surprised when I hit them but I was confident, I saw I had a good break and I just had to keep it." "It's great to win any race, but this race is the biggest on the Gold Coast and one of the toughest criteriums in Australia," said Phillips. Phillips finished second in last year's inaugural Berri International Criterium to McEwen. 1. Jason Phillips (Aus) Die Continentale 2. Robbie McEwen (Aus) Rabobank 3. Sara broke away from World Cup Champion, Anna Wilson in the final stages of the 45 minute race to win by 10 seconds. She had attacked just 15 minutes into the race on Heiko's Hill, with Anna Wilson and Leeanda Cave joining her in the break. The 1.5 km course proved testing for all the riders in the hear, but local knowledge and an enthusiastic home crowd spurred Carrigan on to take out the race. "The home crowd was absolutely wonderful. It was a hard race, especially towards the end when the hill really took it's toll," Sara said. "I ride for the Gold Coast Cats cycling club and they have always given me a lot of support, so it was great to win in front of them." 1. Sara Carrigan 2. Anna Wilson 3. Leeanda Cave 4.
