Blauem Band von Zürich

The "Blauem Band von Zürich" was held on the weekend, a day before the start of the Zurich six day race. The race has been in existence since 1941 and this year marks the 48th edition of the event.

The race is a 40 km pointscore and this year's winner - Stefan Steinweg - had won it previously in 1997. Steinweg showed great strength in this year's event, taking a lap out of the field after just 10 laps of the 250 m track. There followed a series of counter-attacks from the rest of the riders, but Steinweg managed to cover them all. He was also picking up enough points to keep his lead, should he lose the lap. Nearest rival, Andreas Kappes (Ger) was lagging in this regard, although he managed to maintain his second place, just a lap down on Steinweg.

The best Swiss riders were Bruno Risi and Christian Weber (5th and 6th) at three laps down. However, the whole classification from 4th downwards should be treated with caution, as there were difficulties in separating the 52(!) riders on the track. The entire 24 rider field for the six day race was combined with 28 amateurs, making for an extremely fast but messy race. The 50.209 km/h average was the third fastest of all time for this race (the record is 51.972 km/h by Kurt Hermann in 1995)

Just before the break, there was a 40 km madison held, which was won by Belgian-Aussie connection, Gilmore and McGrory from De Wilde/Weber and Risi/Betschart. This is a promising sign for their hopes in the six day event to come.

In the female points-elimination event, Swiss road champion, Priska Doppmann managed to triumph over Dominique Marten. In the sprint series, Patrick Merk revenged himself on Swiss champion Claudio Treig. Merk won all three three-events and was also the fastest one in the one lap time trial (13.65). Finally, the junior points race was dominated by nine Germans in the 24 rider field. Behind Leif Lampater and Sven Kraus was this year's 1 km TT champion, Martin Ehrismann from Switzerland.

However, after the finish of the sprint derby, a another "bomb" exploded for Swiss cycling. The National coaches Mueller and Buchs tendered their immediate resignation along with national sprint coach, Roy Salveter. They had discussed this at the press conference on Friday, but decided to hold off the announcement until after the race. The collapse continues...

The first of Perth's three international criteriums was held on Sunday, November 28th. Scott Suckling upstaged the more fancied riders to record a magnificent victory from Jamie Drew and Henk Vogels, with Ed Hollands leading the Sprint series. The criterium also marked Stuart O'Grady's return to racing, after a scare at the Noosa criterium a few weeks ago threatened to put him out of action for longer.

The women's event saw over 20 riders start, with Sandra Smith taking the win from Hayley Rutherford, and Annabelle Vowels in third place.

The series continues on Wednesday, December 1st at Leederville with the finale at Northbridge the following day.

Carnegie Caulfield CC Criteriums

Australia, November 28th, 1999

An exceptional day and the running of a 'non-elite' women-only race drew 175 starters to the Carnegie Caulfield Club's Sunday morning criterium at Glenvale Crescent, Mulgrave. Run on the popular 1000 metre, flat, fast course, the day could not have gone better.

In a very strong A grade, State Criterium and Road Champion Robert Tighello won the bunch sprint from second again James Taylor. European bound Luke Weir took third from David O'Leary who was forced into the gutter to finish. The race developed as many an A grade affair does - a steady build up of pace resulting from constant attacking and counter attacking. Of note was the fine finish of O'Leary, who until recently proclaimed himself forever a B grader.

The usual suspects led the charge in B grade, a significant breakaway of six riders took a 34 second advantage early in the hour. As the huge field realized the magnitude of the gap, three strong men, Miller, Witkamp and Goewie took on the job of returning the break to the fold. At three laps to go, their task was complete. In the end the veteran Barry Wood won the race from Blackburn's Anthony Smith. David Milwood who was part of the early break and Colombian Mauro Alvarez filled the minor places.

C grade witnessed a successful escape, the four strongest men rode the chasing 30 riders off their wheels. The finishing order made no difference to the escapees as they had long before agreed to spilt the winnings. Russell Wolfe led home Leo DiMartino, Martin Keane and Eddie Perez. The foursome made a powerful argument for mass promotion.

In D grade Ken Ford repeated his efforts of last week by taking the winning breakaway off the front at about half distance. The difference this week was that he took his U15 son Michael with him. Within 15 minutes the five leaders where hot on the heels of the remainder of their group, the suggestion from the sidelines that they not try to overtake the bunch was heeded. As the five escapees recovered slightly, the countdown to the finish began. The father-son duo from Mulgrave took off and finished one-two in farewell rides to D grade, C grade next week. M. Marquas held off Mick Drapac for the minor places.

By all accounts the women's race was a huge success, the organizers were petitioned to repeat it next week, however the plan is to run the next women's race on the 19th of December. The pleasant circumstance where the evenly matched women could ride a tactical race rather than reacting to the power based racing style of the men met with general approval. Catherine Allen from the Blackburn club won the race from Preston's Katrina Purcell. Emma Richard took third place with Blackburn veteran Debbie Chambers fourth.
