Karen Kurreck reports

Another cold, wet day in Europe! This time it was looking ominous at the start, so I had some normal "rain" layers on. The rain stopped for a bit as we were warming up, but started promptly as we did. It wasn't just raining, it was pouring! I was totally soaked within 10km. At 15km, I decided warmth was more important than aerodynamics and I put on the windbreaker I had stuck in my pocket. It didn't keep me dry, but at least it cut the wind.

This was the last relatively flat stage, with only a shorter climb at 61km. There were some crashes in the first 20km, but after that, people sort of figured out that they had to adjust to the conditions and it got a bit better. I just tried to stay out of the wind and out of trouble. There were some attacks, but nothing really went anywhere.

We got to the climb with pretty much the whole peleton intact. Right at the base, my rear derailleur suddenly decided to quit! I had 2 gear choices: a 53x12 or a 39x12. I chose gear number 2 for the climb but it wasn't nearly enough. I had to stand the whole way and I got my strength workout for the week! Luckily the climb was only a few km and although the group did split, the gaps weren't big. I had a nice view of the whole thing from my position at the back! Luperini won the QOM and my group caught up to the front group on the descent (where I used my other gear choice). Once we were all together again, things slowed up a bit and I went back to the team car for a bike change. The spare was a bit small for me, but a whole lot better than what I had. It was still pouring rain, by the way...

With about 5km to go, we made a turn and there was a steep climb of about 1km. The course profile didn't look anything like this! Apparently the same hill was used last year so a lot of people knew about it. Over the top, we were a group of 10 or so and it leveled out and Pia Sundstedt made a good attack and got a gap. Wet technical descents aren't her forte though, and she was caught by the bottom. After the descent, a large group caught back on and we were a group of 40 or so going into the finish.

The finish was pretty insane. There were the usual turns and on top of the rain, the finish was on cobbles. Dream Team won again, this time with Zinaida Staghinskia. Nada Christophole of my team was 2nd. I don't know any more than that. I'm not sure if Diana or Zinaida has the leader's jersey now, but it really doesn't matter since there are still about 40 people tied on time and tomorrow we finish with a 15km, 1350m climb.
