    Stage 1, Santander - Torrelaveja, 163 kms:

Belgian rider Glenn D'Hollander (Vlaanderen 2002) won the first stage of the Circuito Montańés which was raced between Santander to Torrelavega, a distance of 163 kms. He came in 1.03 ahead of Russian Eugeni Seniochkine, who is riding for the Italian Elite squad Vellutex-Colnago. The riders faced intermittent rain throughout the stage. There were several attempts at breaks. Finally, 7 riders went away and opened a 3.00 gap on the peloton. With 40 kms to go, D'Hollander and David Jorda (Sodexho-Morella) were able to reach the top group and then the Belgian, in seemingly excellent form, dropped the remaining breakaway riders and only the Russian could hold his wheel. In the last kms, D'Hollander dropped the Russian and finished alone. Seniouchkine came in ahead of a group of about twenty riders, which was lead by Tom Stremersch (Vlaanderen 2002).

Meanwhile, back in the real world, things were not sailing smoothly for the Vlaanderen 2002 team. The court in Chambery has ordered they be placed under judicial investigation following last year's Tour de Avenir. The police consficated drugs from the car of some team helpers during the Tour. Team leader Roger Swerts says that all the products seized were either vitamins or legally prescribed substances.
