I didn't spend the day looking at my breaks and chainrings. The mechanic, Steve, who is helping us out, decided it was a good idea to change the rear tube, since it had a slow leak. I told him riding with low pressure is part of my secret training. It is especially good because the race gets harder as it continues because more and more air leaks out. We decided I have had enough secret training for one stage race and pumped up a good, sans-leak tube to the full 8bar pressure.I even raced, trying to get into breaks and such. Geraldine's team (every single Austalian in the race) kept the group together. I started attacking pretty much right away. They covered me on each attack and then went to the front and set tempo to keep the attacks to a minumum. I did a few more stints of attacks and got no where. At about 23k to go Mary of Australia, Mari Holden, Bonanomi, a Norwegian, and a NZer got off for a while. Anna Wilson brought us back. It wasn't clear how hard the climbing was going to be at the end and Geraldine was feeling her ride yesterday. While four minutes is a great deal, they were wise to keep things together. I did think with only 23k to go they might not react so strongly. The finish was and furious. I am able to be up there until the very end and then I get nervous in the pushing and back off just enough to keep me out of the bonus seconds. It happened again today. GC changed little other than for Hanka who dropped out, KK who dropped out, Cappolotto who dropped out, and a few others. The Euros are not strong at this time of the year. And most are concentrating on the WC this Sunday. With only Saturday as a rest day, many want another day or two. Also, I hear Hanka is an all or nothing type. She messed up yesterday and has decided to bag it. Stage 6, Friday, March 13, Te Awamutu - Chaupo - Hamilton, 32.7 kms:1. Sara Felloni (Ita) GC Accadue O-Lorena Camicie Akuel 42.02 2. Gios - Japan 37.53.30 Stage 5 Report from Elizabeth EmeryIn the words of the great Curt Johnson, "I race until they tell me to stop." Once again, just hanging in has climbed me up the GC. That and separating myself from the riffraff by getting some bonus seconds in the sprint this afternoon. Not quite what I had in mind for my cycling career but for the moment it earned me some money. Both races today were about the Australian Mafia. Geraldine again had three Australian teams working for her. Today, each stage they went to the front and set a solid tempo to control the attacks from the pack. Again, I tried early on and then later in the day hoping they would relax a bit. No go. Today's race was also about being tired. I woke up tired and rode tired. I am near the limit after 9 days of racing in 12. What else can I tell you all? Oh yes, I've noticed a higher percentage of polished nails in the peleton than in the past. The Mazza team (bike maker) director called one of his riders a dirty foreign name today for wanting some mechanical work. It was quite horrifying actually. They haven't been riding that well here so maybe tensions are high. However, it is early in the season for that kind of behavior. In the sprint this morning, again, I stayed up there until the end and just didn't have the guts to duke it out when the action became hairy. With the Australian Mafia working as hard as did to keep things together, the sprints are mass field sprints. In the afternoon, I got up to the front and stayed there. Geraldine led it out from about 2k which was downhill. We turned around a corner at the 1k sign then another with about 500meters. So I ended up 5th, gaining 2 bonus seconds, which moved me up and away from the mass of people who were in 8th place. I ended up 6th overall. Geraldine won. Sara Folloni of Dream Team 2nd, and Anna Wilson 3rd. Mari Holden was 4th and got the mountain jersey. So, now we rest for a day and then race the second World Cup on Sunday. The course is harder and more technical than the one in Camberra. Being up front will be crucial particularly around one very tight hairpin turn leading into an 80m steep pitch. |
