Report from Karen Kurreck

90 riders made the trip across the ocean from Australia to New Zealand yesterday. Unfortunately, only 50 bikes came along! The rest came this morning, causing a bit of scurrying around. I was one of the lucky ones and got a short spin in last night. Adding to the confusion was the fact that the race flyer said the start was at 10:15, but when we got our race bibles this morning, we found out we had to meet at the hotel at 9:45 for a 7.5km neutral to the start! So much for warming up.

The race is 4 days and 6 stages. Day one was a double day with a 10 km (yes, that's 10km) circuit race followed by an 84km RR. With all the travel yesterday, I think most of us were hoping to ease into the race a bit. This is not possible when you are racing with Hanka Kupfernagel. The morning circuit was 3.6km with 2 climbs, one steep and one not so steep. There are QOM points at the top of the steeper climb every lap. It was a lung-searing, leg burning 15 minutes! Hanka goes from the gun. Mari Holden (Dream Team) grabs her wheel and I grab Mari's wheel and the train leaves the station. Hanka tows Mari and I for about half a lap and pulls off. There is a gap behind us. Mari and I pull through but at about half the speed. A Dutch rider bridges up. Hanka goes to the front again and we all hang on. She pulls off again and a few more bridge up: Gunn-Rita Dahle (Norway), Roberta Bononomi (Dream Team) and Yvonne McGregor. Lap 2, Hanka goes for the QOM and gaps us by about 1 1/2 bike lengths. That's all she needs. We see her again on the podium.

Now our motor is gone and our group is pretty wasted. A large group catches up and it is a big sprint to the line for 2nd taken by Anna WIlson over Sara Felloni (Dream Team). Unfortunately, about 5 meters past the finish there is a crash. Suzy Pryde, Leigh Hobson and Yvonne McGregor go down and they all go to the hospital instead of starting the afternoon stage. Leigh cracked her collarbone (again!), the rumor is Yvonne possibly broke her collarbone and Suzy is bruised and hit her head pretty hard.

One hour later we line up again for stage 2. It is a relatively flat stage with 5 sprints and a QOM. 7km into it, I get a flat. Out of habit, I go to the right side of the road - wrong side down here. Eventually I get a wheel from a neutral vehicle. I try to explain to the mechanic about Klein dropouts but he doesn't listen until he tries to put the wheel in. Oh well. It wasn't that slow of a wheel change, but I had to chase for awhile. So much for trying to take an easy day!

There are lots of attacks and short-lived breaks, but Hanka and her team reel them all in. It is a huge sprint in the end taken by one of the Dutch riders. Anna Wilson is in 2nd. There are time bonuses for the top 5 places in each stage: 7,5,4,3,2 sec. Hanka gets no bonuses in the afternoon, so with 2 2nd places, Anna is creeping up on her for GC. There are probably 20 riders with the same time.
