Brief PreviewThe Vlaamse Wielerweek begins with the E3 Harelbeke and continues with the Brabantse Pijl on Sunday. The races mark the lead up to the Ronde van van Vlaanderen which is staged the following Sunday. The 44th E3 Prijs van Harelbeke, is a category 1.1 race and thus it is immediately below the top classics. It also provides the riders a good preview of the hills that they will have to tackle the week after in the Ronde van Vlaanderen. There are twelve climbs on the "menu" but in the last hour of the race the peloton must go over the Tiegemberg and that is no easy task. The other 11 hills are: La Houppe, Berg Stene, Boigneberg, Eikenberg, Stationsberg, Taaienberg, Ten Houte, Kapelberg, Patersberg, Oude Kwaremont and Kluisberg. The starting list is well endowed with Italian and French teams. They ride the E3 over the cobbles and then the following Tuesday they start in De Panne before racing the Ronde van Vlaanderen the following weekend. The race starts at 11.45 and finishes at 16.35 after a traverse of 206 kms. Harelbeke-Harelbeke, 206 kms:Peter Van Petegem had the quickest finishing legs in the semi-classic E3 Prijs van Harelbeke, beating Andrei Tchmil in the sprint. The race was animated by an attack by Franck Vandenbroucke 40 kms from the end. 3 top riders chased - Peter Van Petegem, Michele Bartoli and Tchmil - and they worked hard together. Vandenbroucke was caught in the last km and coming into Harelbeke it was clear that the race was coming down to a 4-up sprint. Van Petegem came from behind the wheels to win.It was the first victory for Van Petegem for 1999 and a welcome win for TVM who have been banned from several leading races this season - the first the Waalse Pijl (Fleche Wallone). Peter Van Petegem said afterwards: "On the Kwaremont Vandenbroucke was in front. We kept riding together to bring him back. But yes, we only just caught him. Bartoli was very motivated, he is an ex-teammate of VDB. I think that Bartoli rode very hard to stop VDB from winning." Was this a good preparation for the Ronde Van Vlaanderen? Van Petegem: "At this moment, this is a great classic to win." The 4 leaders formed when VDB atacked on the Kwaremont. With 30 km to the finish they had between 35 and 55 seconds on (first a group of 18 and later) the peloton. In front of the peloton the Rabobank and Lampre were doing the most work but they were not efficient enough. Vandenbroecke had a little problem in the last 25 kms - there was no Cofidis car with the leaders (but behind the peloton). He had to wait till 8 km before the finish for his first contact with his team manager. Here is how the gap was brought back:
With 21 km 40 seconds with 18.5 km 54 seconds with 15 km 56 seconds with 8 km 42 seconds with 6 km 35 seconds with 5 km 29 seconds with 3 km 30 seconds with 2 km 23 seconds with 1 km 150 meters Results:

The clash between the ruling elite and the challengers was very evident during the E3-Prijs van Harelbeke which was raced in Belgium today.Today, UCI No. 1, Italian Michele Bartoli was the gladiator representing the ruling elite and Belgian Frank Vandenbroucke was his opponent - fighting for the younger, upcoming riders. While Bartoli held off the attack by stopping Vandenbroucke from winning he also had to incur some loss - not being able to win himself. A group of four riders approached the finish line in Harelbeke: Bartoli, Van Petegem, Tchmil and Vandenbroucke. Each of them are pretty fast sprinters so nothing was certain about the outcome. After passing under the red triangle signalling the final kilometre, Vandenbroucke attacked while the other three riders were anxiously looking backwards expecting the bunch to catch them. A sudden period of inaction occurred before Mapei rider Bartoli employed all of his forces to catch former Mapei rider Vandenbroucke. He took the other two back with him and Van Petegem came from his wheel to win the sprint easily with Milan-San Remo winner Tchmil right behind him. Vandenbroucke, who had painted his hair red before the race started, was the subject of Bartoli's anger. On a hard Flemish hill, the Old Kwaremont, Vandenbroucke attacked ferociously. Being very popular in his home country, a motor rider placed himself right in front of the Cofidis rider, which upset Bartoli. Besides the contest for leadership in pro cycling, there was also the struggle about Vandenbroucke's transfer from Mapei to Cofidis. At the Mapei camp, Vandenbroucke is considered to be ungrateful towards the people who helped him develop himself in the cycling world. He was also not a popular teammate while at the Italian-Belgian team. Winner Van Petegem, not being directly involved in any of this, did not want to comment on the matters. He was just celebrating his victory, and now is focusing on the Ronde van Vlaanderen. He will be one of the favourites for the race along with Vandenbroucke and Bartoli.
