Stage 1, 220 kms:

Only 25 riders were in the leading group at the end of Stage 1. The 114-rider peloton that started the first stage included German Jan Ullrich, who is making his return to racing after illness. He came in 27.36 behind the winner. The major break was instigated by Portuguese rider Pedro Lopes, who took off at the hot spot premie point at km 30. The other 24 riders followed. Only two teams then tried to do anything about the break - Maia and LA Pecol. They were not assisted and finally gave up trying.
