To say today's stage was hell would be inadequate. The course profile indicated that nearly forty kilometers of the 106 would be climbing. We wanted to move Cybil into contention for the young rider's jersey today and with a mountain top finish precious seconds would be gained or lost. We needed to have Cybil on the gaining side of time.

Lady luck, though, was testing team Elita. The early attacks by Saturn combined with the tail wind made for an extremely fast pace. All of team Elita were about fifteen riders back when suddenly everyone hit the ground. I am not sure what caused the crash but I heard brakes squealing, the sound of metal on pavement, women screaming, horns honking, and managers yelling in all the various radios. Taking a quick tally, I realized all but Annie and Sophie were with me. Kim seemed to be the worse off; she now has some lovely chain ring marks in her back. Yelling to Cybil to get on her bike I began to push off. Cybil's rear wheel was jammed in her frame; and, unable to get it out, she hoped on Kim's bike. Unfortunately, the front wheel on Kim's bike was rubbing the brakes. In the mass of confusion, David was not able to get Cybil the spare bike. I decided we needed to get Cybil up to the group; I knew the time we had already lost was going to make this a challenge. And so team Elita began the chase to get Cybil back to the main group. Fortunately, we had practiced team time trialing on Sunday. Finally, after a huge effort from all of us we caught the main group, only to learn that there was a group of twenty-five up the road. Two of the young riders in competition for the under twenty-three jersey were in the front group. We were going to have to chase more. At this point the words flowing out of my mouth would make a truck driver blush. I radioed back to David, filling him in on the status of the race. Then I began the search for teams that would roll through with us. Every team I approached had riders in the break. It seemed as if we were the only team not represented.

As I was making my way up to the front, Cybil was getting yet another bike change behind. I soft pedaled in the wind; as soon as Sarah and Cybil made contact with the group I brought them to the front. The gap to the front group began to come down; and with great relief I passed the word for us all to sit in. Even this was a challenge as the cross winds were creating gaps between riders.

With about fifty kilometers to go a British National team rider and two other riders slipped off the front. The peloton was not overly concerned. However, as we neared the bottom of the climb the three riders had a gap of over two and a half minutes. Seemingly out of no where, Kendra Wenzel and the whole Timex team went streaking to the front with Linda Jackson on the back of the train. I was doubly impressed, by not only Kendra's horsepower, but her ability to close the gap after crashing hard yesterday. Timex began a ruthless chase.

The group was becoming smaller by the kilometer. I made one last effort to get Cybil and Sarah to the front and then hung on for as long as I could. Not very long after the feed zone I began to slowly lose contact with the group. Ah well, it was bound to happen after so much chasing. I knew the sacrifice was worth it as Cybil was riding so well.

As I passed the ten kilometer to go mark I was by myself. When does talking to oneself clarify you as crazy? When does calculating the time until you see your soigneur make you less of a champion? When does your desire to sit in the shade under one of the beautiful aspens make you a touring rider? When does the swelling in your feet, the pressure in your ears, and the sound of your own panting make you feel as if you are the last rider in the peloton, nay the world, to be nearing the finish? Let me say, never. We all go through these sensations, whether off the back, or off the front. And for every day that each one of us swings a leg over the bike and faces what Jim Rabdou has to offer us we prove we are champions.

Back to hell. I am sure the views at the top of the mountain were spectacular. But I only saw the pavement in front of me. I knew, though, as I passed the three kilometer to go sign I would make it to the finish. That is three thousand meters, the distance from our home to the Starbucks.... if only there was one at the top.

Cybil rose majestically to the occasion, placing herself in second for the jersey. Sarah had an excellent ride, finishing just behind Cybil. And Timex's effort paid off as Linda Jackson won the stage by a minute and change. I hope when I am forty that, if I want to, I can school the peloton as Linda did today. Wow.
