Tactically today was an easy race. Make it over the climb with the best group possible and hang on down the descent to the finish in Ketchum. At only 58 miles the stage was not overly difficult, save for the climb up Galena to 8700 feet. In past years today's stage typically cements the overall classification for the race.

Petra Rossner (Germany) attempted to get a head start on the climb by attacking early. As a sprinter, Petra was not considered a threat by Longo or Mari Holden's Dream Team. These were the two teams that had the most to lose if a rider were to stay away and win. Petra's solo break did not last over the climb, although I was secretly hoping she would stay away for the stage win. I always love when a rider tries the unexpected and the gamble pays off with a win for her. Unfortunately, it was not pay day for Petra.

The snow was glistening on the side of the austere mountain and the smell of sage settled over the group as we began the 8 kilometer climb. By two kilometers to the top of the mountain there was a group of about forty still together. Cybil, Sophie myself and Sarah were all climbing well. I was just thinking how very impressive it was that we were all there with Longo, Heeb, and Jackson when what to my wandering eyes did appear, but the sight of Longo going up the road. Mari Holden (Dream Team) and Linda Jackson (Timex) followed. I am not sure what the dynamics were with those three as I was doing all I could to stay with the small group I was in. I was watching my computer counting the meters to the sign warning the trucks about the descent. And, finally, there it was. The last two hundred meters were exposed to the windy side and Sophie helped me over the top. I could see Sarah and Cybil's group just in front of us. Thank god for descents. My Lemond loves descents as much as I do; together we blasted down the hill, taking risks that make the heart beat harder than the climb itself does, and gaining speed out of every corner.

The small group I was with caught the chasing group of about thirty on the bottom. Longo, Jackson and Holden had about a minute on our group. The chase was fierce with many attacks, and a lot of jostling for position in the cross wind. I looked down at my computer and we were flying along at 61 kilometers an hour. For the first time in my racing career I longed for an 11; even with my head down, my feet going as fast as they could, I was whipping the gear. What a glorious feeling.

The wind up for the sprint began at the four kilometer to go cone. Clara Hughes was on the front hammering. And I mean hammering like the men do in the pro races. I made my way up to Sarah, yelling to her to look for Dunlap (two time winner of this stage) and Anna. With a kilometer to go Dunlap and Anna came by me so fast I felt like I was on a tricycle. I kept my eyes on Cybil, staying just behind her in case she was involved in a crash, or I needed to close gaps so we would get the same time. Crossing the finish line I was delighted to hear Sarah was seventh and we all were safe.

Kim, Annie, and Sophie, all super helpful in today's stage, came across not long after in the second main group. At the finish there was a delightful sensation of healthy energy in the air. And how could there not be. All 129 remaining riders had just raced over perhaps the notoriously most difficult climb in a North American women's stage race. And we were greeted by the spectacular town of Sun Valley (Ketchum) with the citizens ambling around congratulating us all on our tremendous feat. We all felt like champions; even if Mari Holden was the rider who won the prize for the day.
