Report:

Ernst Bretscher from Switzerland writes that this race - the Schynberg Rundfahrt has been organised since 1982. It has mostly been a race for Elite Amateurs but for the first time this year it was given UCI Cat 1.5 status. In the two last years (1997 and 1998) the race was held on the same circuit and constituted the Swiss Elite Championsship. The race circuit is 15 kms and the riders had to negotiate it 13 times. Just after the start there is a steep hill with involving a 2.7 km climb and 180 m difference from top to bottom. The last 2 kms of the parcours is also a steep climb.

In this year's race, a group of 19 riders went away on the 3rd lap and the main bunch began losing time. As the main teams had at least one rider in front, the peloton was not interested in working and by the end were 20 minutes down. Many of the main bunch stopped with one lap to go.

On the last two laps there were many attacks in the leading bunch with the duo - Zumsteg and Bertolini prominent. Then it was Faustini alone at the front. But with 3 kms to go a group of 6 took the final uphill kilometers together, and Bertolini was the solo winner.
