Men's Road Championship, 226 kms, June 27Maarten Den Bakker (Rabobank) won the Dutch Championship on Sunday. The race was held in the Limburg region centred on Gulpen over a tough 226 kms course. Den Bakker won by 1.13 from a group of 3 riders - Servais Knaven (TVM), Raymond Meijs (Team Gerolsteiner), and Australian Patrick Jonker (Rabobank). The race became a tactical battle between the two strongest team - Rabobank and TVM, and was alive until the second last lap. Responding to an attack by local Limburg rider Raymond Meijs (who lives at Hulsberg now), Den Bakker benefitted from the presence of Australian rider and teammate Patrick Jonker. Jonker blocked as Den Bakker made a rapid counter-attack. Approaching 30 years of age, this is Den Bakker's second national title. He also won in 1996. It has confirmed his excellent form in the Spring - 2nd in Waalse Pijl (Flèche Wallonne), 3rd in Luik-Bastenaken-Luik (Liège-Bastogne-Liège) and 4th in the Amstel Gold Race.

Anything strange about that? Only that the winner is not a Dutchman. Matthew Hayman is Australian and because he lives in the Netherlands during the racing season and rides with a Dutch license he is allowed to contest and win the Dutch National Championship. Matthew (21) first came to the Netherlands in 1997, was 2nd in Olympia's Tour this year and is currently number 1 in the UCI ranking for Espoirs! He rides for the prestigious Rabobank amateur squad which is part of the Rabobank cycling plan to resurrect Dutch cycling. It is predicted that Hayman will be a strong professional rider.AVS: 38.848 km/h 1. Matthew Hayman (Australia-Rabobank) 4.28.45 2. Addy Engels (Rabobank) 0.11 3. Thorwald Veneberg (Rabobank) 0.13 4.
