German National Championships

Sankt Wendel, Germany, June 25-27, 1999

Men's Road Race Championship, 206 kms, June 27:

Udo Bölts (Telekom) won the German Championship which was contested over 206 kms in the south west town of Sankt Wendel. The 32-year old took his third road championship (previously winning in 1990 and 1995).

On a 10.3 kms circuit, Bölts attacked on the 14th lap from a group of 14 riders leading the race. With Hundertmarck sitting his wheel, Telekom knew they had the top placing. Bölts attacked again on the last climb before the finish and beat his teammate Hundertmarck by 14 seconds.

Hundertmarck said afterwards: "Out tactics were to place 3 riders into the leading group. Udo was simply the strongest of us today."

Rolf Aldag, who fractured his left collar bone during the Tour of Germany, abandoned the race at the half-way mark. It was a test for him to decide whether he will ride the Tour de France. He will now be replaced by Jan Schaffrath.
