Kazak Alexandre Vinokourov (Casino), became the new leader on GC after Stage 6. The 177 kms stage between Challes-les-Eaux and Plaine-Joux was won by French rider David Moncoutié (Cofidis), who achieved his first professional success. The stage was the toughest so far in the tour. Vinokourov, who lost the leader's jersey after the ITT up Mont Ventoux, earlier in the week, now is favoured to win the overall after the last stage into Sallanches à Aix-les-Bains on Sunday.

The young Kazak, who was 7 seconds down on American Jonathan Vaughters at the start of the day, had a great head-to-head contest with Vaughters on the climb of Plaine-Joux, the last difficulty of the day, which included 3 Cat 1 climbs.

The 11 kms climb up Plaine-Joux saw the 25-year old Vinokourov behind a small group at the front. Vaughters appeared to be counting on the presence of Lance Armstrong and Kevin Livingston, to help him. Livingston had been in front over the col de la Colombière (1618 m).

Vinokourov attacked twice. The second did the trick. Without Armstrong's assistance, Vaughters, who dominated the ITT up Ventoux, could not follow the Kazak and the several other attacks that followed. In the last 500 metres, Vinokourov was tiring and he was able to take 7th place. That was enough. Victory went to 24-year old David Moncoutié, who confirmed his climbing skills already seen on the Mont-Faron (during the Tour Mediterranean) and on the Côte de Vidauque (during the Critérium International.

After attacking on the col de Croix-Fry, Moncoutié was joined by a group of 4 counter-attackers with 15 kms to go. He said afterward when questioned about drugs in cycling that: "I want you to know that I have won this stage on water!"

He continued: "At my home there are mountains of 3-4 kms in length. Since I started out as a rouler I have done a lot of works on these climbs. I have also made progress on the descents."
