The feature of the day was the brilliant escape of more than 200 kms by two riders from Brittany - Laurent Madouas (Festina) and Lylian Lebreton (Big Mat-Auber 93). 32-year old Madouas won the 213 kms stage between Digne-les-Bains and Grenoble in front of Lebreton, after their showcase breakaway succeeded.

For Madouas, it was his first success for 3 years, the last being a stage win in the 1996 Tour of Sweden. He said: "Moreover, it is my first sprint victory ... and after 11 years of being a professional."

Not being confident with his sprinting skills, Madouas attacked with about 10 kms to go on a false flat. He remarked: "I thought that Lylian would go off the back at that point. But I didn't count on his determination. I had to then sprint and I attacked with 250 metres from the end."

It was on the Cat 2 Col Bayard after 18.40 had gone only that the two attacked. It had the feel of a premeditated move. Madouas said: "We left Digne and I found myself riding next to Lylian. I suggested to him that we go for it."

For the first 30 kms there were some counter-attacks and the pair had a lead hovering between 15 and 30 seconds. Then, with a constant head-wind, the gap blew out as a result of the neutral riding on the front of the peloton by US Postal and Casino. Only in the closing kms did the pace accelerate as the US Postal team wanted to make sure that Jonathan Vaughter retained his lead on GC. Casino were working to try to steal some seconds off him for their leader, Kazak Alexandre Vinokourov. At the end, the gap remained at 7 seconds between to two.

Tomorrow, the climbing really begins on the stage between Challes-les-Eaux and Plaine-Joux. The peloton face 8 côtes and cols, four of them Cat 1. Madouas said: "I hope that I will have some reserves left."
