The race started in Charbonnière under cloudy skies. The first part of the race was very slow. At the 17 kms mark, 2 groups of 10 riders went away at the front and established a small lead. A few minutes after this Inigo Heredias Gonzales fell and was forced to abandon. Later he was diagnosed with a broken collar bone. At the 31 kms mark the two groups had joined with some additional riders and the 26 riders had 6.40 on the peloton. Another fall occurred at km 50 and Jon Odriozola (Banesto) was forced to abandon. He also sustained a broken collarbone.

At km 50, French rider Vicente Cali (Home Market-Charleroi) attacked and had 11 seconds on the other 25 riders. The peloton was dawdling and at 8.00.

The first bonifacation sprint came at the 72 kms mark - St Pierre de Boeuf - and was won by Casino's Alexandre Vinokourov (Kaz) from Stéphane Heulot (La Française des Jeux) and Stéphane Barthe (Casino). The Kazak gained a 3 seconds bonus which was enough to give him the yellow and blue leader's jersey (a second in front of Heulot).

The average race speed was now running at 41.5 km/h and at the feed zone in Sarras (km 94) there was no change in the front of the race. The peloton was by now working and the leader was down to 4.30 with 50 kms to go. The group of 25 was splitting into three separate groups and at the front 11 of the stronger riders formed.

The second intermediate sprint at Cornas (km 123) with the same three riders in the same order who won the first sprint at St Pieree de Boeuf winning again. Vinokourov then Heulot then Barthe taking the time bonifications.

With 3 kms to go there were still 11 riders leading including Vinokourov, Barthe, Gougot, Heulot, Simon, Bordenave. The peloton was 2.50 down and out of the frame. The sprint that followed was won by Vinokourov.
